Despite the expense (and the odd sapphire thrown in), is Nokia's 8800 Arte actually worth it?
In an interesting first, you can mute the phone when a call is coming in simply by turning it face down on the table. That is great psychology: ‘No, I don't want to talk to you, and actually I don't even want to see that you are calling'.

A classy slider from Nokia, but is its beauty only skin deep?
High quality design and build ; Heavyweight metal and glass construction ; 3.2-megapixel camera ; 1GB internal storage ; 3G connectivity ; Luxury package includes sleek Bluetooth earpiece, desk stand and leather pouch
High price ; No memory card expansion support ; No Wi-Fi ; Heavyweight build = heavy in pocket ; Camera lacks flash ; Mid-tier features on high-end phone
A well-built and sophisticated phone, but it's hard to justify the hefty price tag when everything else in this device is so basic

If you're like the majority of the phone-buying public and haven't got the wonga to afford the obscenely expensive Vertu phones, then Nokia's own select band of premium handsets have proved a godsend. Admittedly, the likes of the 8600 Luna and 8800...
High grade build quality and elegant minimalist design, slide action is still the best in the business, decent feature line-up
No expansion plan for the internal 1GB flash memory, high asking price
The superior build quality of Nokia’s 8800 series has never been questioned but its feature line-up always felt like an after-thought. The 8800 Arte goes a long way to tackling this frustration. Not only is it the most design refined of the 8800 posse...

The metal casing of the phone is made by seamless method, and the display is protected by glass (when other phones traditionally use plastic). Nokia 8800 Arte is convenient to hold in the hands, its keyboard is made in such a way that virtually...

If you think paying more than £700 for a mobile phone is a bit much, then stop reading right now. The Nokia 8800 comes in two versions, and £700 is the least you'll get away with ...
If money is no object you might consider this handset, but even those with pots of cash might find the features they get for the outlay here somewhat below par.

The Nokia 8800 Arte is a promising model from the 8800 series. The device has a stylish, classical appearance and offers original extras such as the possibility to soothe the alarm by turning the telephone face down. You can collect all your favourite...

We review the Nokia 8800 Arte, a luxury 3G mobile with a mouth-watering design and high-end build quality. But is it enough to entice big-spenders?
Sharp, attractive design ; High quality materials and excellent build quality ; 3G connectivity ; 1GB internal memory ; Luxury extras, including sleek Bluetooth headset
No HSDPA or Wi-Fi ; 3.2-megapixel camera has no flash ; No expandable memory card support ; No standard headphone socket ; No stereo earphones supplied ; No 3G face-to-face video calling
Nokia's luxury mobile delivers a high end design with excellent build quality, but features and functionality don't justify the hefty price tag

The 8800 Arte is satisfyingly solid and heavy and its constructed from the finest smoked glass and composite metals. With the slider shut, the 8800 is minimalist chic
It's a stunning-looking phone that's made from the finest materials.
It's expensive, it's heavy, the battery is poor and there's no expandable memory slot.
Despite its shortcomings, the 8800 Arte is so beautifully made, you could forgive it (almost) anything. Until you drop it on your foot
