Motorola Moto E

Motorola redefines what we should expect in an £80 phone

Great value ; Class-leading screen ; Up-to-date software

Poor camera ; Limited storage ; Low-end CPU

As much as there are compromises, once again Motorola has made the right choices with the Moto E display. Resolution is slightly limited but general image quality is well in excess of what we traditionally expect at the price. But, yes, the Moto G is...

Motorola Moto E review

A dinky dialler that's got a lot to shout about

Rock bottom price ; Good screen ; Solid battery ; microSD slot

Terrible camera ; Low internal storage ; Occasional slowdown ; No front camera

The Moto E is just about the cheapest smartphone you can get without wanting to immediately throw it out the window. Spend a little more and you can get a lot more but if your budget won't stretch above £100 then this is a fine choice.

Is the Motorola Moto E the best budget smartphone around?

Great price ; Pure Android ; Sturdy build quality

Iffy camera ; Not made for games ; No 4G

Motorola Moto E review

When Motorola launched the Moto G smartphone last year, it said it wanted to offer "an affordable smartphone for people who don't want to compromise on quality, experience or style". It more than succeeded in that venture, and now its focus shifts to...

Great design, affordable price, good display, excellent battery life, microSD support, raw Android 4.4 operating system, great sound

No front-facing camera, terrible rear camera, slow performance/loading at times, limited internal storage, no 4G connectivity

The Moto E is a brilliant device for the price. If your budget doesn't stretch beyond £100 then we would say - ignoring the lack of 4G connectivity - that there isn't a competing device that offers the same overall experience, specification and design.

Motorola Moto E review: Proving an affordable phone can be fun, too

The $150 Moto E offers LTE connectivity and ample performance, without breaking the bank.

The new Motorola Moto E is proof that a cheap phone can be good, too; you're getting reasonable performance, a sharp display and LTE connectivity for $150, unlocked.

Like its predecessor, camera quality disappoints. The processor also occasionally struggles to keep up with more hardware-intensive tasks, like gaming.

The Moto E delivers in enough of the right areas to make it a fantastic option for a tight budget.

Old Moto E vs New Moto E

We're big fans of Motorola's strategy for cheap Android phones. Pair plain Google Android with the bare essential hardware necessary for a smartphone today and sell it for a competitive price. The new Moto E improves on the original, and here was...

The screen is bigger, it has double the storage, a quad-core processor, support for 4G and a front-facing camera. It’s a very easy choice between the old and new Moto E: the second generation phone is another winner.

On a £100 budget for your next smartphone? The search is over - meet the Moto E

Cheap ; microSD storage (but limited to 32GB) ; Reliable performance ; Compact, sturdy build

Disappointing main camera ; Screen’s great but not HD ; No 4G ; No front camera

More budget brilliance from Motorola, the Moto E is the best smartphone you can buy for less than £100

Lumia 520 vs Motorola Moto E smartphone comparison review

We compare the two best cheap phones you can buy. For full reviews see our articles: Motorola Moto E review: £89 budget smartphone sets new bar and Lumia 520 review: budget smartphone offers good features and build for less than £100.

There is little to choose between the Moto E and the Lumia 520. Indeed, the chief thing to note is that these are both great handsets at a remarkably low price. The Lumia 520 is thinner and lighter, and comes in multiple colours. The Moto E is...

Motorola Moto E review

You will only need to pay £89 to get your hands on a Moto E, unlocked and without a contract. That's an amazingly low price which is dirt cheap rather than even budget. You can get it even lower than this too – just £79 on O2 PAYG. If we could give it...

Motorola set a new benchmark for the budget smartphone with the Moto G but has gone even lower on price with the Moto E. Although we're impressed with the Moto E which will make a great first or spare smartphone, it's worth paying the extra for the...
