The Lumia 535 is Microsoft's 5-inch follow-up to the disappointing Nokia Lumia 530. The small 4-inch screen makes way for a larger 5-inch display as Microsoft seeks to deliver what it thinks is the definitive budget smartphone.
Large, 5-inch screen ; High-res, wide-angle front camera ; Changeable covers
Iffy build quality ; So-so battery life ; Unresponsive screen

A decent budget smartphone with a big screen
Sturdy, colourful build ; Big display ; Full Windows Phone 8.1 ; Wide angle front snapper
Screen sensitivity issues ; Sluggish performance ; Dull display ; Poor rear camera
While this may be a Microsoft branded device, the Nokia Lumia legacy influence is still here. It may be built for a budget consumer, but with a 5-inch display and 5MP selfie shooter, there's still a lot to like here.

You'll notice that there has been a change in terminology when it comes to Lumia. It's not new news, but the Lumia 535 is the first Lumia to appear with Microsoft branding rather than Nokia. The Lumia 535 is the first Microsoft branded handset and,...
Affordable, latest Windows Phone and Lumia software
Display quality is low, touchscreen response is poor, it's sluggish, no 4G
The Lumia 535 is the first Microsoft branded handset and, unfortunately, the experience is poor compared to some of its Lumia predecessors. The poor touchscreen experience feels like a blast from the past, while the exterior finish isn't up to quite...

The Lumia 535 isn't the cheapest in the Lumia Windows Phone range: that honour goes to the new Lumia 430. At £100 the 535 has plenty of competition from budget Android smartphones, but also offers quite a bit more than its predecessor, the Lumia 530....
We're fans of Windows Phone 8.1 but the Lumia 535 compromises in too many areas to make it a bargain at £100. You're better off with a Motorola Moto E or - if you want 4G - the EE Kestrel.

The Microsoft Lumia 535 comes with a 5-inch display, a 5-megapixel camera and the latest Windows Phone software. It's very cheap, too.
The Microsoft Lumia 535 is very cheap, it has a fun design with interchangeable cases, a 5-megapixel front camera and software features found on higher-end Lumias.
It doesn't have 4G LTE, its under-powered processor results in a sluggish interface, the touchscreen can be unresponsive and the screen is neither sharp nor particularly vivid.
The Lumia 535's cheap price, big screen and colourful body earn it plenty of points, but its lack of 4G LTE, unimpressive display and sometimes sluggish interface mean this phone isn't suitable for anything more than the basics.

We get up close and personal with the new Microsoft Lumia 535, a significant device in the mobile world for a number of reasons. Take a look at our review.
Dual-SIM ; Rich software experience ; Great expandable memory options
Lacklustre, unresponsive screen ; Laggy performance ; Disappointing camera
As we mentioned earlier, the Lumia 535 is an interesting choice for Microsoft to place its mark on. We were expecting the rebranding to make its debut on a flagship handset, but siding with the affordable pushes a different message to consumers..

Finding the best cheap smartphone is an important quest. Whether you are buying a smartphone as a gift for a child or older relative, or need a cheap phone yourself, it's important to get it right. There are plenty of terrible cheap smartphones....
Right now there is only one choice: that of the Moto E. But come the new year when the Lumia 535 is in town you will have a tough choice. It is likely that the Lumia 535 will cost a little more. But it has better storage and camera, and a bigger (if...

Microsoft unveiled the Lumia 535 on 11 November, the successor to the Lumia 520 and a slightly higher spec sibling to the Lumia 530 that was launched in August. It's also the first smartphone launched by Microsoft since the Nokia branding was dropped.
The Microsoft Lumia 535 is a cheap and cheerful new Windows-based smartphone that has some benefits over its predecessors, including a slimmer design, a front-facing camera and a bigger display. If you're looking for an ultra-budget smartphone and are...

The tag line for the Microsoft Lumia 535 is 'big on experience'. This, in part, refers to the generous five-inch screen, but Microsoft is also making big claims about the wide-angle selfie camera too. We put it to the test in our lab; read on to see...

This Windows phone is the runt of the litter
Cheap; Unfussy user interface
Poor build quality; Underpowered hardware means sluggish touchscreen responsiveness and slow performance; Disappointing battery life
Not even its bargain-bin price can save this Windows phone from its many, many inadequacies
