Huawei Mate Xs 2 initial review: Reviving a trailblazer

It's been a good couple of years since we last saw an outward folding phone from Huawei, and now it's back with a stronger, lighter and better

Solid and durable design ; Big and bright display ; Triple camera system seems strong ; Light and easy to hold

It is very pricey ; No 5G ; Old Snapdragon processor ; No Google Play

Yes, it’s expensive and no it doesn’t have 5G or Google Play, but the Mate Xs 2 is a testament to Huawei’s hardware design and innovation. It’s a stunning example of a folding phone form factor that other manufacturers have generally shied away from.

Huawei Mate Xs 2 review

Huawei's hardware is as impressive as ever in the Mate Xs 2, which is certainly a stunner, but the usual hardships are still here

Stunning, sleek hardware ; Powerful camera setup ; Huawei AppGallery is better than ever

No 5G ; No Google apps or services ; No wireless charging ; Fragile foldable display is always exposed

The Mate Xs 2 is a fantastic piece of foldable hardware, only really held back by concerns about durability, with its soft, foldable display always exposed. There’s no 5G support though, and while Huawei’s software situation is ever-improving, we still...

Huawei Mate Xs 2 review: better on the outside?

An outward-folder of impressively skinny proportions

Fantastic screen with a barely-there crease ; Barely any bigger than a regular phone when folded ; Excellent camera quality

Relies on outdated hardware ; Mediocre battery life ; App support is a minefield in the West

Arguably the folding form factor that best straddles conventional phones and tablets, but the Mate Xs 2 makes one too many hardware sacrifices to make it work. Premium rivals simply offer more.

Huawei Mate Xs 2 review

A pioneer in foldable phones, Huawei is still making two different types - ones that fold in on themselves, and those that have the display wrap around...

The 7.8-inch display is awesome, with the crease barely noticeable.

The screen is very exposed, particularly so if you decide to avoid the case.

Ultimately, if we were asked whether we'd go ahead and spend €2,000 of our own money on a Mate Xs 2 to use as a daily driver, the answer would still be no. But for what it's worth, that decision would be based on factors outside of it being the type of...

Huawei Mate XS 2 Review: A Creaseless Foldable, for Better or Worse

Huawei bets that single-screen foldable phones are the future.

Creaseless display ; Slim, portable design ; Telephoto camera ; 66W fast charging

Lacks 5G ; Missing Google software and services ; The software doesn't take full advantage of the fold ; So-so battery life ; Phone can't be unfolded when in case

Huawei Mate XS2 hands-on preview

The Huawei Mate XS2 shapes out to be a great foldable device. It feels premium, and Huawei has focused on perfecting the most important aspects of a foldable - the hinge, the crease, the durability of the flexible panel, and the functionality of the OS.

Huawei Mate Xs 2 Review: More Beautiful Than Before

The Huawei Mate Xs 2 is the best-looking thinnest lightest foldable mobile device, though still restricted by lack of Google Mobile Service.

The Huawei Mate Xs 2 is easily the best-looking slimmest foldable smartphone in the market. A large majority of Android apps can be installed by searching from the Petal Search app, though users reliant on Google Android ecosystem apps will find it...

Huawei Mate Xs 2 review: $2,000 foldable as a daily driver

The Mate Xs 2 is the latest luxury foldable from Huawei! In this review, you can find out how good the $2,000 foldable actually is without Google services.

Brilliant 7.8-inch display with 120 hertz refresh rate ; Functions well even when folded ; High performance level ; Solid camera setup with great selfie performance ; Surprisingly thin

No 5G and technically outdated ; Functionally limited without Google services ; Sensitive as it flips outwards ; Not the best case build quality ; Moderate battery life

For a technology fan, the Huawei Mate Xs 2 is really impressive. The operating concept works, the build quality is top notch, and even the handling of the EMUI operating system on the foldable display is impressive. However, this enthusiasm is so...
