Huawei Mate 8

2015 ended on a high for Huawei. In the Nexus 6P it had, alongside Google, released the best Android smartphone of the year. The Chinese brand hopes to begin 2016 on a similar footing with the Mate 8, a super-sized phone just announced at CES 2016 in...

Huawei Mate 8 review

The latest phablet from Huawei might well be its best yet

Great fingerprint sensor ; Gorgeous large display ; Strong battery life

Emotion UI overlay ; Fast charging cable not in the box ; Ugly speaker grill

Huawei's Mate 8 might not be one of the best known phablets on the market, but it offers solid specs at a more affordable price than its competitors. It's not without faults, but the Mate 8 is one of the best choices if you want a larger Android phone.

Huawei Mate 8 review: Big beauty

Not so long ago the idea of a 6-inch phone sounded like a bonkers one. Now it's the norm for many, helped along by the iPhone 6S Plus, and with devices as powerful and refined as the Huawei Mate 8 also coming to market it's perhaps a more appealing...

Superb battery life, ace fingerprint scanner, refined design, smaller than iPhone 6S Plus (despite having a larger 6in screen), reasonable camera and stabilisation

Software not always smart (EMUI 4.0 means no app tray, split screen fairly useless), screen resolution limitations, huge size won't suit all

The Huawei Mate 8 is an echo of the Mate 7. But with an added thump of power at its core, the latest software on board and an improved camera, it's all the more appealing. Plus 6-inch phones are becoming increasingly the norm, which ought to further...

Huawei Mate 8 Review: In Depth

Huawei Mate 8 review: Chinese smartphone maker Huawei has been pouring more time and effort into its smartphones of late, and it hasn't gone unnoticed....

Feature-rich user experience ; Solid screen ; Premium design ; Outstanding battery life

Missing fingerprint gestures ; Weak split-screen multitasking ; Heavy UI ; Weak video recording capabilities

There’s no denying that the Huawei Mate 8 is an extremely well rounded and well put together Android smartphone. The user experience is distinctive and although it isn’t perfect, it works well, feels fluid and boasts enough handy and helpful features...

Huawei Mate 8 review

The Mate 8 is the successor to the Mate 7 and brings Huawei's own Kirin 950 CPU into the mix to create a powerful phablet to rival Samsung and Huawei's own Nexus 6P

In many ways, the Mate 8 is an excellent smartphone. It has a big, high-quality screen and is well made. It isn't the most stylish of phones, but it's fast (unless you're talking about games) and has decent battery life. The camera is a disappointment...

Huawei Mate 8 review: The big Huawei Mate 8 phone is a battery beast that costs too much

The 6-inch Huawei Mate 8's monster battery life is the shining feature in an otherwise pretty-good, but overpriced phone.

Huawei's Mate 8's battery life goes on and on, it snaps good photos and has a fast, accurate fingerprint sensor and a loud speakerphone.

This ginormous 6-inch phone is just too unwieldy for smaller hands. It has a dim screen and a low resolution compared with other phones.

The huge, metal Huawei Mate 8 has plenty of appeal and only minor drawbacks, but it's too expensive to sway fans of large-screen phones from the Nexus 6P or Samsung Galaxy Note 5.

Huawei Mate 8 review

A big and brilliant Android smartphone

Great battery life ; Massive screen ; Strong camera

'Only' 1080p ; Will be too big for some ; Polarising software

The top £500 phone for those who want a truly massive screen

Huawei Mate 8

If Chinese manufacturer Huawei was not being taken seriously by its competitors, the new Mate 8 phablet serves as undeniable proof that it should be. But should you buy it now?

Generous and bright display; Superb battery life; Well constructed body

Thinness makes it difficult to handle; Would benefit from a stylus

The Huawei Mate 8 does a lot of things well. It's display is large and crisp, processor fast and responsive, camera surprisingly solid, and battery life more than ample. Is it the best phablet of 2016 so far? Yes. But is it better than the Samsung...

The Huawei Mate 8 looks like an impressive flagship phone but its camera may lack the quality and consistency to trouble other big hitters.

The Mate 8 shows how far Chinese vendors have come in designing not just budget models but also those aimed at the high end of the market.
