HTC U Play review

A playful smartphone with an identity crisis

Stylish, premium design ; Clean Android interface ; Strong cameras

Poor battery life ; Voice assistant not available yet ; No headphone jack

The HTC U Play is a solid Android smartphone. It has enough grunt under the hood, a decent display, strong cameras and smart bundled earbuds – but it’s a package which feels like it’s missing something.

HTC U Play review

Bets big on design, but could be more a case of game over

Lovely glass-metal combo body ; Decent enough screen

No headphone jack ; Faulty gaming chops ; Laggy camera

Classy and glassy on the outside, but there are a few too many problems inside to warrant the high price

HTC U Play Review: In Depth

HTC U Play Review: HTC's latest mid-range mobile hopes to take on the likes of the OnePlus 3T with its 5.2-inch Full HD screen. Here's our review.

Smart glossy design ; Smart camera tech ; Decent bundled earbuds

Limited performance ; Overshadowed by rivals ; No Companion in sight

The HTC U Play is a mixed bag unfortunately, and very much lurks in the shadows of rivals such as the OnePlus 3T and Samsung’s Galaxy A5 2017. The design is lovely (if easily scuffed) and there’s plenty to like, from the solid 16-megapixel camera tech...

HTC U Play hands-on review

HTC's new phones for 2017 have a focus on AI and come with a new glass design. Take a look at the smaller and cheaper model in our HTC U Play hands-on review.

We're still waiting on the price and to test the AI features out properly, but the new HTC U Play might appeal to some. Its glass design is eye-catching and the phone is a far more manageable size than the U Ultra. Look out for a full review soon.

HTC U Play wants to bring you AI for less (hands-on)

The smaller of HTC's new U phones pairs software smarts with a more pocketable size and midrange price.

HTC U Play Cameraphone Review

We review the ultra-stylish HTC U Play, with 16mp front and rear cameras, and optical image stabilisation.

The HTC U Play is a stylish, slim and attractive smartphone, with a good camera that offers optical image stabilisation, a 16mp BSI CMOS sensor, and a fairly bright f/2.0 aperture. Whilst the f/2.0 aperture is quite good, others smartphones are...

HTC U Play Smartphone Review

Play nice. HTC's U Play is a mid-range smartphone with a very nice casing and some highlights: for example, HTC installs a personal assistant called Sense Companion. But is the U Play's everyday suitability also convincing?

stylish and solid casing ; not much software ; lots of accessories ; preloaded personal assistant ; many LTE bands ; fast Wi-Fi ; NFC and USB OTG ; quick charge

no 3.5-mm jack ; mediocre performance ; fingerprint sensitive ; visible pixels in UltraPixel mode ; camera photos sometimes blurry ; moderate speaker ; muffled microphone

HTC's U Play looks good, comes with a personal assistant, has two high-resolution cameras, and it is bestowed with generous extras in its box. So, why is it so difficult for us to give it an unconditional purchase recommendation in the highly...
