Roku Ultra (2017)

Roku's top-end 4K media streaming box, the Ultra, is packed full of handy features, but whether they're worth the $100 price depends on your viewing needs. For many, the $70 Streaming Stick+ will be just fine.

Lots of streaming apps and services. Wired network connections. Headphone jack in the remote.

No Dolby Vision support. Voice search is very limited.

The Roku Ultra is a capable, full-featured media hub, but the Streaming Stick+ presents just as good a value. The Ultra's larger price tag and design get you an Ethernet port, a USB port, a headphone jack in the remote, and the ability to make the...

Roku Ultra review

Call it the "cascading upgrade effect" (CUE). Every time some newfangled home theater format comes along, like high-definition, 3D, 4K or high dynamic range, you have to upgrade everything associated with it. Not only do you need a new TV, but you also...

The Roku Ultra can access more TV shows and movies in 4K and HDR than most rival devices. It has the most features of any Roku streamer, and unlike the Chromecast Ultra it actually includes a remote (and an Amazon Video app). Roku's ecosystem offers...

It's more expensive than the Roku Premiere+. Content in 4K and HDR is still uncommon, and your HDR TV probably already has compatible apps. Unlike some of those TVs, the Ultra doesn't work with with Dolby Vision HDR. Some app interfaces are less...

If you own a 4K TV and an AV receiver or sound bar that doesn't pass 4K HDR signals, the Roku Ultra is a great 4K streaming choice.

Roku Ultra

The Roku Ultra includes just about every media-streaming feature you can think of, at a premium price.

Speedy performance. Supports 4K HDR video. Advanced remote with headphone jack and microphone.

Added features don't quite justify the premium over the Premiere+.

Conclusions The Ultra is Roku's most impressive streaming device yet, but at $130 it's a bit pricier than the comparable (but not HDR-compatible) Amazon Fire TV . The $100 Premiere+ is a better overall value, offering the same selection of 4K content...

Roku Ultra (2022) Review: Same Streamer, Same Price, Better Voice Remote

The remote is a nice upgrade, but the company's cheaper 4K streaming devices remain better values.

Improved Voice Remote Pro is a welcome addition ; Remote finder is awesome ; Speedy app launching

Roku Streaming Stick 4K Plus is $30 cheaper with similar features ; Weaker voice assistant than Amazon and Google streamers ; No Bluetooth headphone or Wi-Fi 6 support ; No USB-C charging for Voice Remote Pro

Roku Ultra (2017) review: Stuck in the middle

If you need a streaming box with hardwired ethernet support, the Roku Ultra is the cheapest one available.

The remote’s TV controls are a major improvement ; It has an ethernet port ; Straightforward software

Software lacks ambitious ideas ; Voice recognition can be spotty ; No more optical audio port

One might imagine a future in which the Roku Ultra becomes more of an aspirational product, with beefier hardware and more forward-looking software to match.

Roku Ultra and Roku Premiere+ reviews: The priciest Roku still isn't the best Roku

Even before the Roku Ultra arrived, spending more than $100 on a Roku box wasn't really necessary. Last year's Roku 4 was a compromised device at $130, with an internal fan and an unusually large footprint for a media streamer. And besides its support...

Roku Ultra and Streaming Stick+ review: High-end streaming with low-end frills

The company that makes the best low-end devices doesn't impress at the top.

Most 4K TVs already have streaming apps like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video built in. A lot of people own game consoles that come with those apps, too. The Roku Ultra and Streaming Stick+ only do a few things to dissuade users from sticking with what...

Roku Ultra (2017) Review: More of a Great Thing

Aside from losing the optical audio port, there's nothing that makes the Roku Ultra (2017) weaker than last year's model — but there's nothing that really makes it much stronger, either. The revamped remote is convenient, but the hardware is just about...

Incredible app selection ; Improved remote ; Easy to watch your own content ; Full 4K HDR functionality

No optical audio port ; Search and interface haven't advanced much

The Roku Ultra (2017) is an excellent value, especially if you can live with run-of-the-mill audio, but it's similar to last year's model.

Performance Features Ergonomics Value

Continuing to up their game, Roku has introduced new products that add HDR (high dynamic range) to 4K streaming while maintaining their anyone-can-use-it simple menu structure. A slew of new models range from the Express player to a new top-of-the-line...
