The MiniX Neo X5-116A exists in the middle realm somewhere between a media hub and an Android desktop mini PC. If all you're going to do is use the Neo X5 as a media player you'll do adequately, but trying to do anything more with the device will...
Inexpensive for an unlocked Android device. Fully open, stock Android. Compact with plenty of ports. Has built-in storage
You need a touch screen. Clunky with air mouse remote. Really made for tinkerers and Android fans who are tinkerers. Interface is in 1,280 by 800 resolution, even on a 1080p screen
The MiniX Neo X5-116A ($124 list) exists in the middle realm somewhere between a media hub and a desktop-class mini PC. The Neo X5 runs Android 4.1.1 (Jelly Bean), so it is compatible with a large library of Android apps made for tablets and...

A very promising media player.
Official firmware for KikKat 4.4.2 (March 2015) now available and making the device to act faster. I haven't really test wifi but with a USB Ethernet adapter, everything ran smoothly and that include streaming of 1080p movies. There were 2 minor issues...
Device came not rooted but it's relatively easy to do it. Minixforum should be your reference for beta testing, rooting etc. XBMC is pre-installed but you should try KODI, its replacement which will open a whole new world of media entertainment....

Playback of 1080p transport streams from a HD Homerun Prime still struggle, but 720p channels work fine. If you want flawless 1080p support for TS files, then get the quad core version, which is a tad overpriced given that a root is out for the Fire TV.
New version of the firmware (March 2014?) provides lots of updates, but not to the Android OS. Improves memory performance enough that when using the Minix XBMC, plays 1080p just fine, zero problems. Even fixed problems in configuring XBMC via the...
Latest firmware has the DNS set at 75.75.75.75, which sorta works, but prevents you from registering via Google Play for apps. Changing the settings to static, with a DNS of 8.8.8.8 (backup 8.8.4.4) fixes this

Firmware is pretty easy to find on Minix's web site and using the supplied USB cable, its pretty easy to connect to Windows and update things, which bumps you to Android 4.2.2. Once updated, download the customized version of XMBC Minix offers, which...
Plays just about any 720p/1080p file.
Basically need a mouse connected, any mouse will do.

Would have been nice if the first one worked propely...
Should be a good system once I get it working. Has everything I need with its available apps (HBOGO) and its streaming video supported formats.
Arrived DOA. RMA'd and awaiting replacement. Will update if new one works.
Consumer review (newegg.com)
Minix seems to consistently update the firmware so hopefully it will be perfect soon.
best way to turn your tv into the smartest tv. low energy usage
netflix doesn't fully support android mini pc( not minix fault) no dolby digital/dts through xbmc. need to buy seperate remote to get best experience.
