Tokina AT-X 840 AF D 80-400 mm f/4.5-5.6

Many different zoom lenses for amateur photographers are available on the market – you can even say we are spoiled for choice. The offer starts with cheap 55-200 mm class instruments, then features a bit more expensive 70-300 mm devices and lenses with...

very good image quality in the 80-300 mm range ; negligible chromatic aberration at 80 mm focal length ; low distortion level ; well-controlled coma ; very low vignetting ; satisfactory work of autofocus ; solid casing and high build quality ; small...

weak image quality at 400 mm ; huge chromatic aberration in the 300-400 mm range ; minimum focus from as far as 2.5 meters ; distinct astigmatism at longer focal lengths

Tokina AT-X 840 AF D 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6

Available in Canon and Nikon mounts, this lens is currently the most compact and lightweight 400mm zoom, which is a very useful focal length for birds and wildlife.

Compact size; Light weight for a 400mm; Excellent lens hood design

Non-removable tripod collar can get in the way when zooming

REVIEW: Tokina AT-X 840 AF D 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6

This super-telephoto offering from Tokina costs £572, which makes it amongst the cheapest 400mm lenses available, as well as the smallest and lightest. Sigma offer a 120-400mm zoom, which costs around £607 and benefits from silent focusing and Optical...

Compact size; Light weight for a 400mm; Excellent lens hood design

Resolution at 400mm; Chromatic Aberrations at 400mm; Slow auto-focus; Non-removable tripod collar can get in the way when zooming

Tokina AT-X840 AF D - 80-400mm F4.5-5.6

Very sharp pictures, sturdy constructed and easy to carry around. Suitable for taking photos of birds and other animals without the risk of being bitten or mauled by these creatures. Affordable telephoto lens and one does not need to spend his/her...

None so far but need to consider the fact that it has no image stabiliser ( you need to spend at least 300% more if you want a telephoto lens with this capability). This lens needs a lot of light and/or a sturdy tripod or shoot in high ISO.

Tokina AT-X840 AF D - 80-400mm F4.5-5.6

The very quiet operation of the auto focus is very nice. The lens focuses very fast and it gets a good amout of light. Image quality is very nice even in lower light. I really like the range the 100 mm is very sweet.

The lens is heavier than I thought it would be. the maual lens adjustment is is a little close to the zoom ring and is still somewhat easy to get them mixed up; but, I have only had the lens out twice.

Tokina AT-X840 AF D - 80-400mm F4.5-5.6

Well made but a little heavy. It does have a collar that one can screw in a tripod or better still a monopod. I am very pleased with my purchase which will soon be tried out on wildlife in Scotland.

Not found any yet.
