Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD Review

John Riley reviews the new Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD, a full-frame portrait lens with Vibration Compensation.

Beautiful, high-quality images ; Fast and silent AF ; Effective VC system ; Very well controlled CA ; Excellent flare resistance ; 5-year warranty ; Low distortion ; Beautiful bokeh

Limited choice of mounts

A slightly slower maximum aperture of f/1.8 (many 85mm lenses are f/1.4 designs) does seem to have its advantages in terms of a more compact, lighter lens and also a lower cost. Performance is impeccable, the lens handles superbly and the price well...

Tamron SP 85 mm f/1.8 Di VC USD

At the beginning of September 2015 the Tamron company presented a new line of lenses called SP, with a completely different appearance and type of casings. The lenses were weather-sealed constructions designed in Japan and they boasted image...

Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD

The Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD is an incredibly sharp prime lens in a classic portrait focal length, featuring an image stabilization system that sets it apart from the competition.

Extremely sharp. Minimal distortion. Wide aperture. Optical stabilization system. Available for multiple camera systems. Full-frame coverage.

Dim corners at wide apertures. Pricey.

Conclusions The Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD is a lens without many real flaws. It's incredibly sharp, has a wide aperture that allows you to shoot in low light and capture portraits with a smooth, blurred background, and image stabilization steadies...

Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD Review

The new Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD is an exciting lens, offering built-in vibration compensation and weather-sealing, which the comparable lenses from Sigma, Canon and Nikon do not feature. As you'd expect from Tamron, the price is also very...

Tamron SP 85mm f1.8 review

The Tamron SP 85mm f1.8 Di VC USD is a stabilized full-frame short telephoto lens available in Canon, Nikon, and Sony A mounts. Announced in February 2016, it complements the series of stabilized f1.8 primes from Tamron. The new lens is also compatible...

Very good image quality across the full-frame area ; Quite nice Bokeh ; Weather sealing plus fluorine coating at the front lens ; Quiet and fast AF operation ; Image stabilization

Image stabilization could be better ; AF needs fine-tuning via TAP-in Console

The Tamron SP 85mm f1.8 Di VC USD is the first and only stabilized large aperture 85mm lens for owners of Canon or Nikon DSLRs. So this gives the lens a pretty unique position. With its f1.8 focal ratio plus image stabilization you can shoot static...

Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD

Superbly sharp across the frame and great contrast. Great price for this class of lens.

Vibration Control can hinder fast auto focus lock on a bit.

Tamron SP 85 mm f/1.8 Di VC USD

Just received my 85VC. Optically it's perfect -- wide open resolution is amazing, coma and chromatic aberrations are non-existent, and flare resistance is very good. However it is so big and heavy, much larger and heavier than my Samyang 85/1.4 and...

Top notch optics. Very good focus speed and accuracy. Vibration reduction is usable

Focus drift with residual spherical aberration. Very big and heavy. Expensive
