Sony FE 50mm f/1.8

It's no secret that the Alpha 7 series of full-frame compact system cameras (CSC) has been a runaway success for Sony. By providing excellent image quality in a package that's smaller and more portable than any comparable full-frame DSLR, it has become...

Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 E Lens Review

John Riley reviews the new full-frame 50mm f/1.8 prime lens for Sony E mount cameras.

Excellent central sharpness ; Low central CA ; Very easy to use effectively ; Direct manual focus feature ; No flare issues

AF slow ; Visible edge CA ; Fairly soft edges

The appeal of the inexpensive fast 50mm “standard lens” is easy to appreciate and this Sony lens has much to recommend it. However, the edges are relatively soft and the price maybe a tad too high. Time will no doubt settle the latter point.

Sony E 50mm F1.8 OSS

The Sony E 50mm F1.8 OSS is a short telephoto lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras. It's a strong performer thanks to sharp optics and optical stabilization.

Wide aperture. Optical stabilization. Crisp optics. Minimal distortion. Compact. Affordable.

Dim corners. Omits weather sealing. Electronic manual focus.

The Sony E 50mm F1.8 OSS is a solid option for photographers invested in the APS-C system. Its short telephoto field of view is a great choice for portraiture and for general use when you're not in a confined space. A wide aperture design blurs...

Sony FE 50mm F1.8

The Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 is a budget full-frame 50mm lens for the Alpha mirrorless system. Optics are sound, but its autofocus motor is sluggish.

Crisp from edge to edge when stopped down. Light and compact. Minimal distortion. Solid construction with included lens hood.

Slow focus. Noticeable chromatic aberration. Edge softness and dimmed corners at wide apertures. Omits optical stabilization.

The Sony FE 50mm F1.8 comes in at a low price compared with other lenses in the Sony mirrorless system, which trends to the expensive side as it is. It delivers excellent center sharpness when shot wide open, and is crisp from edge to edge when shot at...

Sony FE 50mm F1.8

For the price, the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 lens is a must have for anyone that owns an E-mount camera. While it focuses slow and produces some vignetting, it also creates nice bokeh and handles low-light well. Read more in our Full Conclusion.

Lightweight and compact so it's easy to carry in your bag or on an adventure ; Maximum f/1.8 aperture is great for low-light shooting ; Great Bokeh for defocused backgrounds ; Very Affordable at $200

Slight Vignetting ; No Optical Image Stabilization ; Slow Autofocus

Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 Review

This lens has been a long time coming for full-frame E-mount cameras, and it certainly makes a welcome addition to Sony’s lens line-up if you’re in the market for a fast, well-priced standard prime that offers excellent image quality.

Sony DT 50mm F1.8 SAM Review

The Sony DT 50mm F1.8 SAM is a small and lightweight short portrait lens that won't break the bank. Sure, build quality isn't that great and it's a little hesitant and very noisy to focus, but overall this 50mm optic reliably delivers excellent...

Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 SEL50F18F Review

As an economical way to get a "nifty fifty", the average Sony user probably won't complain about the Sony FE 50mm ƒ/1.8: at $250, it's one of Sony's least expensive lenses, though compared to other manufacturers, there is still a premium price.

Sony 50mm f/1.8 DT SAM SAL-50F18 Review

While the lens is just slightly soft at ƒ/1.8, it's no more soft than its contemporaries from other manufacturers, and when stopped down to ƒ/2.8 it provides sharp images indeed. Chromatic aberration is very well-handled, though when used wide open...
