Sony DT 18-70 mm f/3.5-5.6

At the end of January 2006 the photographic community was electrified finding out that Sony was taking over the photographical division of Konica-Minolta. Sony had been in this line of business for a long time because of its quite popular digital...

useful focal lengths range in a compact and physically light housing ; affordable price ; decently controlled vignetting ; not very high coma ; quite accurate autofocus

weak resolution in the frame centre and especially weak at the frame edge ; monstrous chromatic aberration in the 18-30 mm range ; high astigmatism ; slow fastness ; a lot of plastic components in housing and mount ; slow and noisy autofocus

Sony DT 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6

With its loud AF motor, this lens can be rather distracting to the photographer.

The lens only managed an average optical performance, which when combined with the reasonable build quality but poor handling, places this optic firmly in the mediocre camp. Save up your money and look for a replacement.

Sony 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6 DT

The Sony 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6 DT is the bottom end standard zoom lens of theAlpha systems. It is usually not sold separately but in camera-lens "kits".As a designated "DT" lens it can only be used on Sony/Minolta APS-C DSLRs. Its field of view is...

The Sony 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6 DT is a cheap kit zoom with sells around 100 €/US$ andthis is also an indication for what you can expect from this lens. Technically theresolution figures are decent at 18mm and 40mm - less so at 70mm and especially at...

Sony DT 18-70mm 1:3.5-5.6 Lens Review

The DT 18-70mm 1:3.5-5.6 is Sony's standard kit lens supplied with their entry level DSLRs, which they describe as a versatile general purpose lens covering a wide range of applications, and which features aspheric and ED glass lens elements for...

Extended focal length range compared to other kit lenses (70mm vs 55mm) ; Extremely low light falloff ; Generally consistent image quality across most of the range

Chromatic aberration from 18mm to 35mm ; Soft corners at most focal lengths and apertures ; Poor manual focus ring

The DT 18-70mm is an inexpensive and reasonably capable lens, which will at least give new owners a starting point for their adventures into DSLR photography. The slightly extended telephoto range compared to other manufacturers' equivalents is welcome...

Sony 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6 DT SAL-1870 Review

The Sony 18-70mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 is a capable kit lens, producing consistently above-average sharp images. It has some weak points - chromatic aberration below 50mm, and we're not big fans of lenses whose front filters turn while focusing or zooming.

Sony 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6 DT SAL-1870 review by badger_packer_fan

Contrary to what was stated in the review notes section, this was NOT designed for a full frame camera, hence it won't work perfectly with the A900. It vignettes badly at 18mm and doesn't clear up until 24mm or so, at least on my Maxxum 7.

compact, light, decent performance

not exceptional at anything
