Sigma AF 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC HSM OS (Nikon) - Review / Test Report

The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM left us with mixed feelings. Physically it is no doubt a welcome step-up from Nikon's own entry-level offerings. The build quality is on a very high level for this lens class. The only issue here is the focus ring...

Sigma 18-50 mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM

In March 2009 Sigma released a new lens – Sigma 18-50 mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM. I must admit I was surprised about this novelty and the first thought that crossed my mind when I saw its parameters was: “what for?”. Sigma has two quite good lenses in its...

Tight lens body that doesn’t change its dimensions ; The presence of image stabilization and HSM in this price class ; Very good or even great image quality at the center of the frame for all focal lengths ; Slight chromatic aberration for longer focal...

Poor image quality at the edge of the frame, especially visible at the widest angle of view ; Large chromatic aberration at 18 mm focal length ; Noticeable coma ; Quite large vignetting in the whole focal length range ; Work against the bright light...

Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM

This standard zoom for DSLRs with APS-C or smaller sensors cost £250 and includes optical stabilisation technology and a HyperSonic focusing motor.

Internal focus and zoom; Optical Stabilisation; Good resolution at wider apertures; Low distortion

Resolution falloff at smaller apertures

REVIEW: Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM

ePHOTOzine's expert Gary Wolstenholme takes a long look at one of Sigma's zoom lenses.

Internal focus and zoom; Optical Stabilisation; Good resolution at wider apertures; Low distortion

Fingers tend to catch on rotating focus ring; Resolution falloff at smaller apertures

Overall, this lens isn't a bad performer and will suit those looking either for a replacement upgrade to their standard 18-55mm kit lens, or a solid starter lens that covers the standard focal ranges.

best value if you look for a studio lens between 24 and 35 for aps-c (except productfotos)

but my standard studio lens between 24 and 35mm at f8 too f11, best handling, no extension, stabilisized and fast and excact AF

a lot of optical disadvantages, if you use this lens outdoor at 18 or 50mm wide open, ok from 24 too 35mm
