Pentax DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 ED AL IF SDM

Review of the Pentax DA 16-50mm f/2.8 ED AL IF SDM lens

Nice balance and robust feel

Slightly stiff and jerky zoom action

The most expensive of the Pentax lenses in this category 16-50mm did not always deliver everything that it promised. In particular, the f/2.8 aperture is more for bright viewing than it is for top-quality imaging. Similarly, the SDM system is indeed...

Pentax SMC-DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 ED [IF] SDM

The Pentax SMC-DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 ED [IF] SDM is part of the professional grade DA* lens lineup by Pentax. At around 600-700 &eur;/US$ it is surprisingly affordable when considering its direct counterparts like the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 USM IS or the...

It is difficult to find a final verdict for the Pentax SMC DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 ED [IF] SDM. On the one hand it has some obvious problems like a weak border performance at max. aperture and very pronounced lateral chromatic aberrations (CAs). On the other...

Small, light and solid, high-resolution, high-contrast

Chromatic aberration

The lens provides high resolution, with just chromatic aberrations spoiling its performance

Pentax SMC-DA 16-45mm f/4 ED AL

The Pentax SMC-DA 16-45mm f/4 ED AL is something like a "consensus" lens in thePentax community. It is affordable enough for starters yet interesting enoughfor enthusiasts. Its field-of-view is equivalent to 24.5-67.5mm in the 35mm format - a pretty...

The Pentax SMC-DA 16-45mm f/4 ED AL is an impressive standard zoom ... with a bug. The resolution figures indicate a very good resolution characteristic throughout the zoom range. Distortions and vignetting are quite typical for a good APS-C standard...

Pentax smc DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 ED AL (IF) SDM

I have had this lens for more than a year now and my experience is unfortunately quite mixed. I used it mainly for landscapes, with additonal filtering (Hoya Pro 1 D polarizer and Cokin P system).

Weather sealed ; Sharpness ; Color accuracy

Questionable durability/solidness (definitely in my case) ; Poor flare resistance ; High level of chromatic aberration ; Needs the largest (and most expensive) square filters (vignetting is visible even with a wide-angle adapter for Cokin P system) ;...

Unbeatable bang for the buck! Top pick!

With the introduction of DA*16-50/2.8, this little brother has become available used on EBay at 1/2 its original price. This makes the DA 16-45/4 ever more appealing than the kit DA 18-55 due to the vastly superior optical performance (sharp wide open,...

Excellent optics Really strong close-focusing performance SMC ensures low flare, good

Zooming out to 16mm blocks in-camera flash Average fit and finish Moderate CA
