This is a great lens. A tripod is almost a must for macro shots because there is no image stabilization, but you would likely be using one anyway for macros.

The Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5/5.6L USM IS L-series telephoto zoom lens equipped with an Image Stabilizer. It is fairly big and heavy, it weighs about 1.3 kilos. It is also so compact that it doesn't feel long and shaky, especially at the 100 mm end.
