The Toshiba Libretto was the first truly ultra-portable notebook, but how does the new version measure up to modern competition?
Expert review by : Stephen Patrick (pocket-lint.com)
Toshiba has been designing and manufacturing notebooks for 20 years, starting with the T110 in 1985, which weighed in at over 7kg, had a battery life of 60 minutes and green LCD screen. To celebrate, the company has chosen to reinstate one of its older...
Super-compact, great value
A little too small for main computer
The Toshiba Libretto U100 is an amazing notebook that highlights many of the technologies that make Toshiba one of the leading manufacturers in the world. We found the screen to be a nice addition. While you won't want to use the U100 as your main...

You may recognise the Libretto name from the distant past, when handheld PCs were all the rage, but while this Libretto U100 may look and feel like the 90s original (a laptop PC about the size ...
As with the original, the latest Libretto will make you think about the uses you could put it to, but perhaps the most limiting factor is the price.

Tiny and light, powerful for its size
Can be difficult to control pointer
The Libretto's miniature size and light weight will attract veterans of the road who want to travel without being encumbered.

Though the Libretto U100 has the enviable combination of a small size and a powerful processor, in the final analysis, it's just too diminutive for many to use.

Little big book
Smaller and lighter than almost any other notebook; wide, high-resolution display; fingerprint reader; nearly five hours of battery power.
Tiny keyboard and screen; weak audio; limited to 1GB of RAM; no Gigabit Ethernet; three-year warranty costs extra; no S-Video port.
Though the Toshiba Libretto U100 has the enviable combination of a small size and a powerful processor, in the final analysis, it's just too diminutive for many to use.

The Libretto's screen is by far the biggest in this crop of miniature PCs. It sports a 7.2-inch widescreen with Toshiba's TruBrite technology. It looks just as nice as the Sony U750P's XBrite screen. Its high resolution (1280-by-768) is great for DVD...
Fingerprint reader. Excellent battery life. 60GB hard drive. Great little widescreen
Poor placement of the pointing stick. Small keyboard
It looks like nothing more than a clamshell PDA, but inside you'll find a fully functional Microsoft Windows XP operating system, a fingerprint reader, and a 60GB hard drive.

Unlike most of the incredibly-advanced-Far-Eastern-technology-that-we-will-never-see-over-here (IAFETTWWNSOH), Toshiba is bringing its latest Lilliputian Libretto, the U100, to America. The Libretto ultra portable notebook line has been marketed in...
