A great-looking ultrabook – but not quite perfect

Huawei's MateBook X Pro 2 refreshes last year's model with Intel's latest laptop CPUs and dedicated Nvidia graphics.
At a first glance, the MateBook X Pro 2 feels like an iterative update from Huawei, but new Whiskey Lake CPUs and more powerful graphics, not to mention plenty of style, could make this a hit – if the price is right.

The best laptop of 2018
Incredibly slick, sensible design ; Gorgeous, bright display ; Strong all-around performance ; Terrific battery life
No SD card slot ; Clever webcam is still flawed ; Mystic Silver is Core i7 only
Huawei has crafted a sleeper hit best laptop of 2018 with its MateBook X Pro, a surprisingly sublime marriage of function and form with few, if any, flaws to speak of for all audiences both professional and prosumer.

With a stunning trim-bezel screen, heaps of power on tap, ample ports (including full-size USB), and a great-looking finish throughout, it MateBook X
Tiny screen bezel is the smallest in the business ; Bright and resolution touchscreen looks superb ; Heaps of power on tap ; Full size USB plus two USB-C for the future ; Discrete graphics (and off-board compatibility too)
Battery life won't hit double figures ; Camera placement isn't right ; Auto-brightness is overzealous ; Screen too glossy and therefore reflects ; No SD card slot
With a stunning trim-bezel screen, heaps of power on tap, ample ports (including full-size USB), and a great-looking finish throughout, it MateBook X Pro is, in many ways, the Windows laptop to outdo the Apple MacBook Pro.

With upgrades including a touchscreen, quad speakers, Thunderbolt 3 and an 8th-gen Intel processor (and MX150 graphics) the MateBook X Pro is a very tempting ultraportable laptop.

A slimline beauty that's ready to crash Apple's party
Ultra-skinny screen bezels ; Powerful CPU/GPU combo for an ultraportable ; Loads of storage and respectable battery life
Touchpad can be finickity ; Webcam angle isn’t very flattering ; Looks a little too familiar
A seriously stylish and powerful Windows laptop with some clever ideas to get the maximum display for your dollar
