HP Envy 4 Ultrabook review

A portable and affordable Ultrabook from HP with occasional usability issues

Sexy design ; Sounds great ; Very affordable ; Light and portable ; Bright screen

Awful touchpad buttons ; Average battery life ; Rattling keyboard ; No USB 3.0 ; Integrated graphics

Like its big brother, the HP Envy 6, the 14-inch HP Envy 4 is an affordable Ultrabook with good looks and sound, priced at £650 in the UK and $800 in the US.

HP Envy TouchSmart Ultrabook 4 review

If the weight doesn't bother you, there's a lot to like about the HP Envy TouchSmart Ultrabook 4. The keyboard is short-throw, but it types well. The touchpad is a one-piece rocking unit, and has a good overall feel, though the press to click function...

The chief issue, as mentioned, with the Envy TouchSmart Ultrabook 4 is its weight. To be fair, HP is hardly alone - I've seen a number of Ultrabooks, including older, non-touch based systems come in at over four pounds. If the heft doesn't bother you,...

HP Envy 4-1020ea review

The trackpad is a good size and responsive to the touch, although we're not fans of the integrated mouse buttons. The natural typing position places your right hand over the trackpad but you can disable it easily.

The Envy 4 is a good looking and well-made laptop for the price. It's not as attractive at Lenovo's U410, though, and battery life is the only real standout feature. We prefer the U410's extra gaming power, but the Envy 4 remains a sensible choice if...

HP Envy Ultrabook 4 review

The HP Envy Ultrabook 4 is aptly named - this Ultrabook's premium design and subtle pop of colour makes it the envy of ultraportables everywhere.

The HP Envy 4 is aptly named. It's a solid machine, with good performance scores, excellent speakers and audio enhancement software, and a mediocre screen, keyboard, and trackpad. The only big drawback is the battery life, which is disappointingly...

HP Envy TouchSmart Ultrabook 4 review

The HP Envy TouchSmart Ultrabook 4 is a cleanly designed, good performing Windows 8 laptop with a nice array of ports and good input ergonomics.

The chief issue, as mentioned, with the Envy TouchSmart Ultrabook 4 is its weight. To be fair, HP is hardly alone - I've seen a number of Ultrabooks, including older, non-touch based systems come in at over 2kg. If the heft doesn't bother you, then the...

HP Envy Ultrabook 4 review

Ultrabooks, for the most part, look the same: skinny, sleek, and an awful lot like Apple's MacBook line. But the HP Envy 4 is different. It appears to be bigger and thicker than other 14-inch Ultrabooks (it's not), but it has a design that's,...

HP Envy Touchsmart 4 Ultrabook

The Envy Touchsmart 4 has a 14in touchscreen, but it's a heavy Ultrabook and it could use a better configuration

Good selection of ports ; Decent CPU performance ; Decent battery life

Screen's angles and overall quality ; Only single-band Wi-Fi ; Keyboard not backlit

There just isn't enough good stuff inside the HP Envy Touchsmart 4 to justify its $1599 price tag. It's basically a stock-standard 14in Ultrabook with a touch panel, and it's quite heavy compared to other 14in Ultrabooks, too. We'd like to see this...

HP Envy Touchsmart 4 Review

The addition of a touchscreen drives up the Envy Touchsmart's price, shortens the battery life, and makes the Ultrabook heavier. In the end, the gains don't balance the losses.

The addition of the touchscreen drives up the Envy’s price, drops the battery life, and makes the Ultrabook heavier than before. None of these trade-offs seem worth it. Touch does make the Windows 8 experience a little more enjoyable on laptops that...

HP Envy TouchSmart Ultrabook 4 review

To prepare for the Windows 8 onslaught, laptop manufacturers are trying all sorts of inventive touchscreen notebook designs. Some screens flip, some spin, some twist, and some can actually be...

Excellent touch experience ; Few potential dealbreakers ; Decent array of ports

Uninspired design ; Ugly screen ; Unimpressive battery life

HP Envy TouchSmart Ultrabook 4 review

Laptops with touch screens aren't new territory for HP. Windows 8 and its touch-friendly interface, however, gives consumers more of a reason to have one, even on traditional laptop designs like the HP Envy TouchSmart Ultrabook 4 (4t-1100 series to be...

HP's Envy TouchSmart Ultrabook 4 is an attractive ultrabook with a respectable mix of components for its price, a responsive touch screen, and a backlit keyboard.

The Envy TouchSmart 4 isn't very configurable, so you can't make it too much more powerful than it already is. It's on the heavy side for an "ultrabook" (if you consider 4.5 pounds heavy). Its touch pad is jumpy at default settings.

The HP Envy TouchSmart Ultrabook 4 is a good gateway to the Windows 8 experience with a responsive touch screen in a traditional laptop body.
