Dell Precision M3800 (2015)

When we reviewed the original Precision M3800 at the start of 2014, we concluded that it was one of the MacBook Pro's only valid rivals – but that was 18 months ago, and in the laptop world that's a lifetime.

Rapid, well-balanced specification ; Good-looking design ; High-quality 4K screen ; Comfortable keyboard

Poor battery life ; Outpaced in benchmarks by other machines ; Business features absent

The best reason not to buy a MacBook Pro

Stunning screen resolution and quality ; Superb slim and light design ; High-end performance ; ISV-certified GPU

Middling battery life ; MacBook slightly faster ; A little noisy and warm under heavy load

The stunning screen is accompanied by decent speakers. They’re loud enough to fill a room with sound, and balance is good: the high-end is snappy and lively without being overwhelming, and the mid-range is meaty enough to make audio sound suitably...

Dell Precision M3800 review

Can powerful and portable successfully mix? Dell thinks it has a working combination

Superb CPU performance ; Superb graphics performance ; Thin-and-light design ; High-DPI QHD+ display ; SSD, 802.11ac wireless networking

Software sometimes doesn't work well on high-DPI screens ; Poor battery life ; No ethernet port or optical drive

If you can live with its quirks, the M3800 is still one of the best Windows laptops available and something we truly enjoyed using. The Dell Precision M3800 is a great laptop with superb desktop-like processor performance, a powerful GPU and a truly...

Dell Precision M3800 review (2015)

We wanted to like the Dell Precision M3800 - but what is with the battery life?

The Precision M3800 is Dell’s take on the ‘Ultrabook’ portable workstation notebook. It’s made from a mixture of materials, and has an undersized battery in order to stay fashionably trim. In its favour, the quad-core processor and midrange...

Dell Precision M3800 review

There are several versions of the M3800 available – the entry-level model takes a 1920 x 1080-pixel screen, but the stand-out feature of the Dell M3800 only comes with the dearer version we received, with a QHD+ resolution display. This has a whopping...

We have mixed feelings about the Dell M3800. It squeezes incredible performance into a thin and light chassis, with superb build quality. But its poor battery life is unacceptable, and there's no easy fix for the DPI issues in some Windows desktop...

Loads of power and a high-DPI display packed into a slim, attractive chassis - there's room for improvement, though

Dell has done well to pack usable amounts of workstation power into such an attractive lightweight package and, while we’re still not sure about the benefits of high-DPI displays, the quality on offer is superb. Our biggest worry, however, concerns...

Dell Precision M3800 review

Dell packs a beautiful 15in display (3,200 x 1,880) into a 19mm chassis. But is performance and battery life up to scratch?

Class-leading screen; Fantastic design; Huge power; ISV-certified GPU; Good keyboard

High price; Mediocre battery life; High heat and noise; No numberpad; Average SSD

A brilliant workstation laptops which balances great design with power. However, it could have better battery life and it is expensive.

Dell Precision M3800 (2015)

With its 4K screen and thin and light chassis, the latest Dell Precision M3800 is a capable mobile workstation for the architect or engineer on the go.

Portable workstation with ISV-certified Nvidia Quadro graphics. Thin and light. 3,840-by-2,160 resolution (4K) touch screen. Thunderbolt 2 port.

Sealed battery and chassis. Identically colored USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports. No built-in Ethernet. Only a one-year warranty. Short battery life in testing.

Overall, this year's Dell Precision M3800 is an improvement over the previous iteration in terms of connectivity, price, and screen resolution. Its battery life is not as long as last year's M3800, but that's to be expected, given the higher-resolution...
