Apple MacBook Air 13-inch 2012

Even without a Retina Display, the new MacBook Air is well worth considering.

Good screen (for TN) with 1440 x 900 res ; Class-leading connectivity ; Sleek, attractive design ; Relatively powerful specifications ; Excellent usability

No (Retina) upgrade to the display ; Same old chassis ; No Gigabit Ethernet or HDMI ; Non-standard screen resolution ; Noisy under load

Apple MacBook Air 13in (Mid-2012) review

The Apple MacBook Pro with Retina display grabbed all the limelight when it launched this June. At the same launch event though its lightweight compadre the MacBook Air benefitted from a quiet refresh. And a most useful one at that.

This revised 13in MacBook Air is a little bit faster in general speed, a lot faster in graphics speed – if only catching up with 2010’s Air – but with approaching an hour of extra battery life. We also appreciate the even quieter fan. This is the...

Apple MacBook Air 13in (2012) review

If you're an Apple fan, deciding which MacBook to buy just got harder – here's the case for the 2012 Air

More grunt, but remains totally silent ; Flawless build quality

Starts expensive, and only gets pricier ; Skinny rivals are snapping at its heels

The Air hangs on to its position as the best lightweight laptop to beat – for now

Apple MacBook Air 11in (Mid-2012) review

The tiny Apple MacBook Air 11in (Mid-2012) benefits enormously from faster ports and a faster, leaner processor.

Looking beyond our misgivings over the cheaper screen, the 2012 MacBook Air 11in is an improvement in every direction for the smallest and cutest Mac portable ever made.

Apple MacBook Air 11in 2012

Review The 11in MacBook Air took top spot in El Reg's recent round-up of the best Ultrabooks [1] – even though, strictly speaking, it isn't actually an Ultrabook, according to Intel's proprietary definition of the term. This 2012 model doesn't tamper...

This year’s MacBook Air hasn’t been reinvented in the same way as the MacBook Pro has. It’s essentially a housekeeping update that introduces Intel's Ivy Bridge platform and at long last brings in USB 3. Existing owners won’t need to rush out and...

Apple MacBook Air 11-inch (Mid 2012)

The Apple MacBook Air 11-inch (Mid-2012) gets a third-generation Intel processor and USB 3.0. But ultrabooks have caught up, and surpassed the MacBook on some features (like screens) and price points.

Thin, Light. Third Generation Intel Core processor. Bright screen. Nice multi-touch trackpad. Backlit keyboard. USB 3.0 ports. Thunderbolt port. Dual-band Wi-Fi.

Ultrabooks are catching up on weight and performance. Middling battery life. Chassis precludes full sized HDMI or Ethernet ports. New MagSafe 2 port needs adapter for old MagSafe adapters and monitors. No SD card slot. Small amount of flash storage.

11-inch MacBook Air still rules its space

The 2012 version of Apple's smallest Netbook is faster and its battery lasts longer. But is that enough?

The new ; has third-gen Intel Core i5 and i7 processors, USB 3.0 ports, slightly improved battery life, and a lower price on the higher-end model.

The Air still has relatively few ports and an expensive starting $999 price for only a 64GB SSD -- and that 11-inch screen feels small for its size.

The new 11-inch MacBook Air is every bit as fast as the 13-inch Air, despite its smaller size, but you'll give up 2 hours of battery life in the bargain.

Apple MacBook Air review

Editors' note: As of June 2009, the product reviewed here has been replaced by these updated models .

Incredibly thin yet surprisingly sturdy; new trackpad gesture controls are very useful; remote optical drive makes living without a built-in drive much easier.

Very limited connectivity; slower than other MacBooks; SSD hard-drive option is ridiculously expensive and standard hard drive is small; battery is not user replaceable.

The design is revolutionary, but Apple's MacBook Air will appeal to a smaller, more specialized audience than the standard MacBook, thanks to a stripped-down set of connections and features.
