Sony MDR-Z7

The Sony MDR-Z7 are big, super-comfortable headphones: what you should be looking for if you want something for late-night movie-watching and game-playing. They'll let you listen away in style without keeping anyone else in the house awake.

Powerful sound ; Wide soundstage ; Very comfortable

Slightly soft mid-range ; Unusually unchallenging at the price

Incredibly comfortable headphones that are the perfect late-night accompaniment to a home cinema system.

Sony MDR-Z7 Headphone Review

Sony's new MDR-Z7 headphones are designed to work with high resolution music but are they high fidelity?

Clear, accurate and refined sound ; Usefully sensitive ; Beautifully built

Bit clinical ; Rather large ; No storage ; Slightly soulless

Having been sent two Sony products back-to-back, I find myself drawing slightly contrasting experiences from then. The NWZ-ZX1 is flawed in a number of ways and faces stiff competition from more conventional means of listening to music on the move. The...

Sony MDR-Z7

The Sony MDR-Z7 headphones deliver gorgeous, detailed audio, with lifelike bass depth and crystal-clear highs.

Exceptional audio performance with rich, accurate lows, and detailed, clear highs. Exceedingly comfortable over long listening sessions.

No extra cable with inline remote control. No carrying case or pouch.

Sony's MDR-Z7 headphones sound gorgeous—they're perfectly suited for those seeking to hear every last detail. All genres sound fantastic through their drivers, and the fit is comfortable, even during long listening periods. To check mixes in a...

Sony MDR Z7

At this price point, a lot of audiophiles choose to go with an open-back headphone to get that more open, airy quality that open-back headphones deliver (the Beyerdynamic T90 , HiFiMan HE-400i or various Grados, for example). The MDR-Z7 is a...

The Sony MDR-Z7 is a well-crafted, very comfortable audiophile-grade headphone that features well-balanced, articulate sound. For a closed-back headphone, the soundstage is wide (it sounds more like an open-back headphone). Two cables are included, one...

Expensive; no protective carrying case or pouch.

While expensive, the well-built and supercomfortable Sony MDR-Z7 can go toe to toe with competing high-end audiophile headphones.

Sony MDR-Z7 Headphones and PHA-3 Portable DAC and Headphone Amp Review

the Sony PHA-3 battery powered DAC/headphone amp and the Kimber Kable MUC-B20BL1 balanced headphone cable.

The Sony MDR-Z7’s are not perfect. The midrange was sometimes a bit recessed and the bass was not the tightest or most extended that I have experienced. They were also a bit warm sounding compared to other audiophile headphones I have heard. So sure...

Sony MDR-Z7 review: A high-end headphone that's truly high-end

Finally, Sony's made a headphone that can go toe to toe with the top audiophile models.

Sony MDR-Z7 review: Currently the best wired over-ear headphones I've reviewed

I handle a lot of headphones around here. Everything from in-ear to over-ear, from $40 to $700 and the Sony MDR-Z7 are simply the best over-ears I've used.

Solid build quality ; Nice design ; Lightweight ; Comfortable padding ; Extraordinary sound

These are on the pricey side and many users just won't shell this much money out ; A case would have been nice

These are highly recommended over the ear wired headphones. The high price may not be for everyone but if your pockets are deep and you’re ready to spend this much you won’t be disappointed.

Sony MDR-Z7 Headphone and PHA-3 Headphone Amp

Sony MDR-Z7 Performance Build Quality Comfort

Sony's hardly a newcomer to the upper echelons of the headphone scene. Some of you might recall the legendary MDR-R10 from 1989—at $2,500, it was the most expensive headphone in the world. The sleek Qualia 010 debuted in 2004, and that one bore a...

Review: Sony MDR-Z7 headphones

Sony has been doing audio longer than most of the big brands, and as such, it has a pretty solid reputation for things that sound great. Generally, though, if you need things that sound great, you need to be prepared to spend up big, so can Sony's $799...

Beautifully rich sound; Very balanced; Not overly proprietary cable, based on 3.5mm with screw in sections that hold in place well; Insanely comfortable; Wearable in public thanks to a fairly simple design;

Expensive; Might be heavy for some people;
