HyperX Cloud Alpha S Gaming Headset Review: Airy Fit, Virtual Surround Sound

The HyperX Cloud Alpha S gaming headset adds virtual surround sound and bass sliders to an already impressive headset, but with varying results.

Comfortable, interesting design ; Game / chat balance button ; Resistant to fingerprints ; Virtual surround sound amplifies audio in gaming, movies

No software ; Bass sliders don’t add much thump ; Virtual surround sound isn’t great for music

The HyperX Cloud Alpha S offers a lot for its price, including a lightweight fit and handy inline controls. But its bass adjustment sliders are forgettable.

HyperX Cloud Alpha S Review

Powerful, balanced sound ; Includes two sets of earpads ; Solid build quality

Lacks high-frequency finesse ; Simulated surround effect isn't very compelling

The HyperX Cloud Alpha S includes adjustable bass and simulated surround sound in a capable but unimpressive gaming headset.

HyperX Cloud Alpha S (2019) review

Even if the Cloud Alpha S no longer qualifies as the best cheap gaming headset, it's still a pretty good gaming headset.

Comfortable to wear ; Dual-chambered audio sounds great ; 7.1 support is a great addition

Adequate microphone ; More expensive than the first Alpha and not terribly different

HyperX Cloud Alpha S Review

The HyperX Cloud Alpha S are the next generation of the HyperX Cloud Alpha. These wired gaming headphones maintain a similarly great build quality and are just a...

Very good boom microphone. Excellent build quality. Unique bass slider on both ear cups that control the amount of bass independently of one another.

Bass and treble delivery varies significantly across users. Limited companion software.

The HyperX Cloud Alpha S are okay for neutral sound. Their bass and treble delivery depend on their fit, seal, and positioning, and without an EQ, there isn't a way to get them to sound more neutral. While they have a bass slider on each ear cup, it's...

HyperX Cloud Alpha S review

The HyperX Cloud Alpha S is a great headset, but not worth the price bump from the base model.

Comfortable for long sessions ; Sounds great ; Attractive design

Mixer isn't all that useful ; Virtual 7.1 surround distorts sounds

It’s comfortable to wear and the sound is punchy—but the addition of surround sound doesn’t justify the inflated price.

HyperX Cloud Alpha S Review

The Cloud Alpha S is a perfectly good headset, thanks to its quality stereo sound, but it's easy to get a better model for the same price.

both offer similar features and comparable sound for $100 apiece. Before you open your wallet for the Cloud Alpha S, it's worth at least checking out those two as well.
