Astro A40 MixAmp M80

I've tried many gaming headsets in my time, but never actually had a chance to get my hands (or head) on a pair of Astro A40s. Well-known for being one of the top headsets on the market, I opened up my first pair with high hopes for the Xbox One and PC...

Durable, comfortable design ; Excellent sound quality ; MixAmp M80 is a perfect addition

Fairly expensive ; No surround sound

The Astro A40 is a perfect headset for whatever you use your Xbox One for. It's not too expensive, and the appeal of the MixAmp M80 just adds to its excellent audio capabilities.

Astro's latest A40 headset lets you customise your gaming cans (hands-on)

Combining great gaming audio and chat with a fully customisable look and feel, the Astro A40 TR headset and MixAmp Pro sounds great and looks even better.

Astro Gaming A40 TR + MixAmp Pro TR

Astro Gaming's A40 TR headset with MixAmp Pro TR is a high-quality wired gaming headset/amp combination that provides a very comfortable fit and excellent audio for a premium price.

Excellent sound quality. Light, sturdy design feels premium. Plenty of audio customization options through the Astro Command app.

Expensive for a wired-only headset. PS4 Slim users need an HDMI splitter.

Bottom Line: Astro Gaming's A40 TR headset with MixAmp Pro TR is a high-quality wired gaming headset/amp combination that provides a very comfortable fit and excellent audio for a premium price.

Astro A40 TR plus MixAmp review: A tough sell nowadays, but still a top-notch headset

Astro's A40 TR and redesigned MixAmp feel pricier than ever given the current state of the headset market, but great build quality and a bevy of input options might win you over.

MixAmp handles a sizable number of inputs with ease ; Sounds great, albeit much better with EQ ; Microphone is one of the best on the market

Expensive, especially for a wired headset ; MixAmp purchase is borderline essential ; Cable is long and tends to rub against the neck

So, the million (or $250) question: Does the A40 with the MixAmp sound good enough to justify its price? That answer is complicated. The A40 with MixAmp sounds great, definitely one of the better-sounding gaming headset packages. But $250 is steep...

Astro A40 TR Headset + MixAmp Pro 2019 Review

The Astro A40 TR Headset + MixAmp Pro 2019 is a gaming headset with a great microphone performance. These headphones have a warm sound profile that can be adjust...

MixAmp allows you to mix game and chat audio. Companion software with graphic EQ and presets. Great microphone performance. Comfortable and sturdy design. Open, spacious passive soundstage.

No IP rating for water resistance. Bulky design. Poor noise isolation, by design. No phone call management controls. Treble accuracy out-of-the-box is just okay.

The Astro A40 headset is good for neutral sound. These headphones have a great, spacious passive soundstage to help immerse you in your audio. However, they're prone to inconsistent treble delivery and have a warm sound profile. While it's not as...

Astro's latest A40 headset lets you customise your gaming cans (hands-on)

Astro's range of gaming headsets has always been well regarded: back in 2012 I was blown away by the Astro A50 series, while one year earlier my colleague Jeff Bakalar called the A40 series "one of the best virtual surround-sound gaming headset systems...

It's early days, but so far the Astro A40 TR headset is wowing me just as much as the A50 did -- maybe even a little more. I'll be testing it further on the PS4 and updating this hands-on first take in the near future.

Astro A40 + MixAmp Pro Headset Review: Great Sound Meets Great Customization

The A40 + MixAmp is a very expensive audio setup. It doesn't work that well for living room configurations, and the sound quality without the amp is variable. Nonetheless, I enjoyed every minute I spent gaming with the device.

Excellent sound ; Intuitive amp ; Comfortable fit ; Good for both PC and consoles

Not great for living room setups ; Expensive

Pick up the Astro A40 + MixAmp if you want to do some serious gaming or streaming from a desk setup. If you game primarily in the living room, though, you may want a wireless option instead.

Astro A40 TR X-Edition Gaming Headset Review: 10 Years of Quality

When you consider that the A40 TR has basically not changed in the past 10 years, it's remarkable how well the headset has held up. It still sounds great, looks great and works with just about any system effortlessly. At the same time, it's missed out...

Excellent in-game sound ; Generally comfortable fit ; Works with any platform

So-so music performance ; No inline volume controls ; Expensive

The Astro A40 TR gaming headset is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" incarnate, and there's a lot about the device that simply ain't broke.
