TomTom GO 500

TomTom's radical redesign is a huge success

Lifetime TomTom traffic ; Lifetime European map updates ; Redesigned menu interface

Traffic updates require smartphone tethering ; LIVE services only include traffic and speed camera updates

However, it's worth noting that although TomTom claims the data consumption is minimal – just 7MB per month for an hour's usage a day during peak traffic times – you will need to ensure your smartphone has enough power to maintain the connection for...

Review: TomTom Go 500 GPS

Because I use my smartphone's various navigation features, my standalone GPS device has sat unused in my glove compartment for the past few years. The smartphone's constant data connection plus the variety of mapping apps and turn-by-turn direction...

For anyone who is considering upgrading from an outdated GPS or who want to give their smartphones a break, the TomTom Go 500 is certainly worth checking out.

Expert Review

The TomTom GO 500 adds handsfree capabilities to an already impressive set of GP features.

Touchscreen LCD, excellent mapping software, Bluetooth capabilities, extremely customisable

Address searching could be improved, no speed camera or safety warnings, no external volume control

TomTom GO 500 GPS unit

The TomTom GO 500 isn't perfect, but remains one of the best GPS units we've ever used

Excellent search functionality ; Responsive screen ; Good overall navigation experience

Safety alerts require yearly subscription ; Live traffic requires smartphone tethering ; Map Share not available, yet

The TomTom GO 500 has a new user interface that strips away the traditional address entry search process, and its capacitive touch screen is responsive. Safety camera alerts are an optional extra and you'll need to tether your smartphone to get live...

TomTom GO 500 review

TomTom has the edge in terms of map accuracy and traffic information repeatedly besting Waze and other services. But many drivers will turn to free smartphones alternatives anyway.

TomTom Go 500

Good navigation tools. Doubles as a bluetooth handsfree kit.

Dodgy navigation choices.

The TomTom Go 500 is an easy to use and exceptionally clever little GPS device for in-car navigation.

TomTom GO 500 Review

The TomTom GO 500 has voice recognition and lifetime map updates, and it comes preloaded with maps of North America. Though it's dependent on your smartphone to provide up-to-the-minute traffic alerts, and it doesn't have the most intuitive interface....

It has built-in voice command software, so you can command the device verbally and keep your focus on the road.

It has to be paired with your smartphone in order to receive traffic information.

Voice recognition and a smart design make this one of the top navigation GPS units on the market.
