TomTom XL 250 GPS unit

This TomTom GPS unit is equipped with an extra-large 4.3in touchscreen

Good value, EasyPort mount, redesigned menu, lane guidance, text-to-speech, preloaded safety alerts

Slightly slow route recalculation, no Australian text-to-speech voice, no AC adapter included, no live traffic

The TomTom XL 250 has a slightly redesigned interface that aims to make navigation even simpler. The XL 250 represents good value thanks to its lane guidance, safety camera alerts and a slim design.

TomTom XL 250 (2013)

TomTom's budget GPS offers simple navigation if that's what you're after, but you'll need some patience to go with it.

Simple map layout. Small size means it's very portable.

Very slow to get GPS lock. Very slow to re-route. Screen reflectivity is an issue in bright light. No lifetime maps.

TomTom's budget GPS offers simple navigation if that's what you're after, but you'll need a bit of patience to go with it.

TomTom XL 250

Simplified interface. On-device map correction. Correction sharing. Lane info almost everywhere. Windshield mount ingenious.

...but fiddly to adjust. Text-to-speech flaws. Manual day/night mode.

Take one XL 340, bung in the simplified interface from the entry-level Start and, voila, the slightly cheaper XL 250. Nice, but in no way revolutionary.

TomTom XL 250

The TomTom XL 250 brings simple navigation to a large screen. This entry-level device does not have the bells and whistles found on other GPS devices but can get you from point A to B.

Big screen; Loud speaker; Easy to mount; Simple navigation; Text to speech; Can upload/download map corrections

Occasional slowdowns with route calculations; No AC adapter and case included

TomTom XL 250

Bought Xl250 after breaking Xl340. Seriously dumbed-down menu and no audible overspeed indicator even though the speed colour changes (not much use when watching the road). Instead of a simple programming change, you need to buy the more expensive...

Nothing

No audible overspeed alert

Local maps way out of date, one showing a drainage ditch as a road.

It works

but not that good

fragile GPS unit

The touch screen was very fragile and cracked during normal touch screen operation within the first 6 months. TomTom does not cover touch screen even in warranty period. I was willing to get it serviced but their service team required a $90 assesment...

point of interest feature was good, has a good robust suction windscreen holder

At time of writing, it is very difficult to get contact details from website. Bad customer service on web and over phone.

Tom Tom XL250

I purchased one of these a couple of weeks back with the intention of using it on an upcoming trip to Europe. The plan was to load the Westrern European maps available from the TomTom website on to it. Following extensive research I found the TomTom...
