Magellan eXplorist 710

Magellan's eXplorist 710 packs in comprehensive hiking GPS features, particularly in the multimedia department.

Unique multimedia features ; Comprehensive hiking GPS functions ; Comparably well priced

Entering coordinates can be convoluted

Aside from the multimedia functions, the Magellan eXplorist 710 is essentially a very comprehensively featured albeit not groundbreaking hiking GPS. The near-£400 price may seem a lot, but it compares quite favourably with other devices offering a...

Magellan eXplorist 710 review

The eXplorist 710 is a rugged GPS device, coming in a rounded, heavy, solid case, with the screen deeply recessed in the body for extra protection. Magellan claims it's waterproof enough to survive rain and occasional puddle immersion, but it also...

Magellan eXplorist 710

Not so much a sat nav – although it can do that – but a tool to guide you around the countryside for what I am told is a new craze Geo Tagging. People hide clues and you then go on a search for the next and so on using this tool.

Sometimes you will need to prove you have been somewhere so the built in camera can do that with time and place information. It is 12.5x6.5x3cm and weights 225grams. It is powered by two standard ‘AA’ batteries. The base of the face has a gap that...

Magellan Explorist 710 hiking GPS

Review The Explorist 710 is top of the line in Magellan's new x10 series of multi-purpose GPS devices and offers preloaded topographical maps, turn-by-turn navigation, geocaching [1], tracking and a host of other features in one handy robust unit.

There’s no doubt the Explorist 710 does everything it says on the box and does it pretty well. On the hill, its ability to give you a pinpoint location is useful if you have OS maps loaded, but the 3in screen is an inherent limitation, although it...

Magellan eXplorist review: Magellan eXplorist

According to Geocaching.com, "Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your...

The eXplorist GC is a rugged little GPS device that is IPX-7 waterproof. The device is ready to go out of the box, with preloaded geocaches and included batteries. All relevant information about a geocache can be accessed from the eXplorist's...

The device could really benefit from a touch screen. The lack of an internal compass means that heading can only be tracked based on movement.

The Magellan eXplorist GC sits at a price and feature sweet spot that makes it a great entry point into the world of geocaching for the urban outdoorsman.

Magellan eXplorist 710 review

Magellan reinvents the handheld GPS interface The Magellan eXplorist 710 is the top of the line unit in Magellan's new eXplorist x10 series, offering a preloaded topo map and turn-by-turn directions, allowing it to serve as a dual-purpose unit. It also...

Innovative, intuitive interface ; Extensive customization options reduce number of steps required to access features ; Preloaded topo maps ; Preloaded highway maps for turn by turn directions ; Extensive world-wide basemap ; Paperless geocaching ;...

Poor battery life ; Contour lines difficult to see in some public land areas ; Lists with slider menus difficult to navigate ; Metal slot on rear makes unit more susceptible to sliding when set down ; Slow to start up

Since posting this review I’ve heard from Magellan. Many of my quibbles are on their update roadmap, or at least being investigated. As for the more significant issues, a contour line visibility fix is slated for the next update. In regards to battery...
