Garmin GPSMap 62s GPS

There are certain products that practically beg you to strap on a good pair of hiking boots and go find a nature trail, or even just a whiff of the great outdoors. One such case in point is Garmin's GPSMap 62s.

Rugged, Solid build, Changeable batteries, Responsive and quick to attain a fix on one’s location

Screen could be brighter at maximum

Garmin GPSMAP 62s review

Hands on with the Garmin GPSMAP 62s It's finally here… The Garmin GPSMAP 62s brings a long-awaited update to the fabled and much-loved GPSMAP 60CSx, which has reigned supreme as the gold standard handheld GPS for more than four years. During that time,...

Excellent menu system; fast access to features ; Bright screen ; Ability to load Garmin custom maps and BirdsEye aerial imagery ; Paperless geocaching ; Tri-axial compass ; Extensive customization options ; Advanced track navigation ; Wireless data...

Small, low resolution screen ; Text entry more difficult than on a touchscreen Oregon ; Relatively heavy (compared to Oregon series) ; Most units seem to sport a creaky case ; Firmware still seems a bit immature

Updated to reflect my testing of production (non-beta) firmware version 2.50.

Garmin GPSMAP 62S

Good solid construction. Battery life is long. Picks up a strong signal fast.

A bit heavy compared to rivals. You have to use garmin base camp which is slightly pants.

Garmin GPSMAP 62s Handheld GPS Navigator

Very happy and has made my geocaching more enjoyable.

After years of Magellan, my last being a explorist 600, I can not believe the speed of Satellite capture. Fairly easy to figure out the menus

Maps from Garmin are expensive but there a plenty of online maps to download

Garmin GPSMAP 62s Handheld GPS Navigator

Garmin documentation sucks – Garmin should be embarrassed for providing such inadequate information. Fortunately there plenty of information available on the web to make up for Garmin’s shortfall. Screen isn’t any larger than my old Lorance, but it is...

smaller and lighter than my old Lorance handheld, color screen, can create custom maps, accepts plenty of the free maps that are available - no need to pay extra for Garmin maps, good battery life

VERY poor documentation, small screen, may be more, I'm still getting used to it

Get the 24k maps for your region. It's worth it. So far Nicads have lasted the longest. I got a full 10 hours of data collection on one charge. Fairly accurate. I have been consistent 3-6 feet off of published geodetic points. Considering it's a...

If you've used Garmin before, you won't have problems with this one ; IT never loses satellite lock unless you near a military micro-wave station. LOL ; Added a Micro-SD. No muss, no fuss

I wish it it would accept DMS Points of Interest instead of decimal. Not a huge deal breaker, but it would be nice not to have to depend on 3rd party stuff to convert

Garmin GPSMAP 62s Handheld GPS Navigator

I have some nit-pics with this unit but overall it's excellent. Shipping from PCNation was fast! From mouse-click to doorstep in a few days.

I like the big, bright screen; it’s easy to use even in full sun. Unit feels good in the hand. Mine does not suffer from the squeak that some others have reported. The buttons give good feedback but feel mushy. Screen is bright and easy to use even...

The menus are not, in my opinion, particularly well laid out. Once you get used to where the options you want are located this ceases to be an issue but it can make for a frustrating learning curve. Waypoint and Track management, in particular, seem to...
