Garmin Oregon 550t Handheld GPS Navigator

This rugged GPS navigator isn't cheap but it is full of features for the serious hiker.

Although the list price for the Garmin Oregon 550t is close to £500, we’ve already seen it available for nearer to £300 on a number of retail websites. This still doesn’t exactly make it a bargain, and it’s even more of a serious hiker’s GPS than the...

Best handheld GPS

Reviewers point to Garmin's Oregon 550t as the top choice for serious enthusiasts. Its impressive lineup of features includes an easy-to-use touch-screen display with an interface that resembles that of the Apple iPhone. You'll also find a...

Garmin Oregon 550T Review

Physically, the Oregon 550Tt appears virtually identical to previous Oregon models, sharing the same screen size, resolution, and overall dimensions as the Oregon 400 and 300 series.

Garmin Oregon 550t review

Hands on with the Garmin Oregon 550t UPDATE: It appears that newer production runs of the 550 series models are now getting the brighter screen first introduced in the Oregon 450 series. UPDATE 2: The Oregon series is compatible with Garmin's new...

Garmin can do better with this

The custom map feature. Generally speaking, the accuracy ; The repair/replacement coverage. I ran over it with a Quadrunner, and the repair/replacement was much cheaper than the purchase price

Can only load one custom map at a time. Annoying. I can understand Garmin wanting to sell their maps, but if you buy everything they have covering the western U.S., they should let the user take advantage of an 8GB compact SD. Also, the Garmin topos...

Poor reception

Garmin needs to do a recall on this turkey.

The Oregon 550T has all the bells and whistles. The best part is being able to overlay custom maps and use Birdseye satellite photography. It has a decent camera. It should do it all

It doesn't work half the time. It has to sometimes be restarted because it cannot find satellites. And when it does, it doesn't point the right direction accurately. I used it the other day in the middle of Tokyo Bay and it still took forever to get a...

Lackluster performance

User Interface is very un-refined for a unit of this price caliber. The included street maps showes zig zagged streets for roads that are perfectly straight. Often shows you over 100 feet from a road your standing on. This does not appear to be a GPS...

Opens you up to the world of Geocaching ; Camera tags your geographic location to each photo ; Water resistant / ruggedized

Price is not in line with performance ; Screen is dimmer then my 5yr old cell phone LCD ; Where to" - doesn't include point on map. (need to first create a point using a different menu ; Distance to Destination" only available on the map if added under...

Some GPS knowledge helps.

I have used the GPS for geocaching and it is great. Menus are not intuitive, have to hunt for some menus. Uses GPS terminology in the manual that has a learning curve for beginners. Still haven\'t found out how to make coordinates the default setting....

Mostly use for geocaching. Never had it off yet with 50 caches. Easy to use and makes caching easy.
