The GPS revolution is great, but there are still many people who get lost on foot as well as in the car. While you could, in theory, pack a TomTom in your slacks, you'd be sporting the kind of bulge that would clear a shopping precinct in seconds.

Acer e310 Travel Companion

 

GPS (global position system) technology has been around for quite a while, but until now most of the devices have been designed to work in vehicles. With its e310, Acer has taken up the challenge of life on foot.

Overall, we liked the Acer e310 Travel Companion, and its ability to work equally well on foot and on four wheels makes it one of the more versatile GPS devices around. It's true that the verbal instructions are annoying, and it does seem slow to react...

Acer E310 Travel Companion

 

I would call it a personal navigation unit as not only can it be fitted in a car but it has a pedestrian mode that lasts a reasonable time between charges.

The unit is small at 10x6x2cm and weights only around 120grams, it easily fits in the palm on my hand. Doing basic things is easy, however making changes to the defaults is not, the PDF manual may be helpful for those wanting to use it as an MP3...
