PlayStation Portal review: Cloud gaming arrives one year on

After 12 months of gaming with PlayStation Portal, Sony's dedicated PS5 remote play handheld console, we deliver our updated verdict

Immersive 8in display ; DualSense controls with low latency ; Mostly solid streaming quality ; Now supports cloud gaming

Dropouts and occasional bugs ; LCD is clearly inferior to OLED ; A lot of money for a device that can’t run any games natively ; No Bluetooth

Its large display and full suite of DualSense controls make the PlayStation Portal the ultimate remote play device for your PS5, but it’s missing basic features and consistent performance depends on the strength of your Wi-Fi

PlayStation Portal review: PS5 streaming handheld cuts a lot of corners

The PlayStation Portal is a serviceable option for handheld PS5 streaming. Just don't expect more than the bare minimum.

Low price Light and comfortable Solid display Full DualSense features

Awkward touch implementation No Bluetooth support Can't hook up external devices Absent settings

“The PlayStation Portal cuts a whole lot of corners to achieve its low price tag.”

PlayStation Portal Review: A PS5 in Your Hands, With Limits

This in-home streaming buddy for the PlayStation 5 is the best way to play Sony games remotely, but it's not as good as it could be.

Big, crisp 8-inch display ; Excellent controller and haptics ; Easy to set up

Streaming game quality varies greatly ; No Bluetooth audio support ; You could use the PS Remote Play app on your phone or tablet instead

PlayStation Portal review: I have a stream for handheld PS5 games

After weeks of gaming with PlayStation Portal, Sony's dedicated PS5 remote play handheld console, we deliver our final verdict

Immersive 8in display ; DualSense controls with low latency ; Mostly solid streaming quality ; Good battery life

Dropouts and occasional bugs ; LCD is clearly inferior to OLED ; A lot of money for a device that can’t run any games natively ; No Bluetooth or cloud streaming support

Its large display and full suite of DualSense controls make the PlayStation Portal the ultimate remote play device for your PS5, but it’s missing basic features and consistent performance depends on the strength of your Wi-Fi

PlayStation Portal review: a one-trick-pony

Elegant hardware meets an inelegant single-answer product.

Lovely hardware ; Works well (mostly) ; Great for RPGs

Only does one thing ; Not the best value

The PlayStation Portal is a lovely piece of hardware, offering a very specific solution that many will already have a fix for. A lack of features (such as cloud streaming) may disappoint, but what’s here is well executed.

PlayStation Portal review

A game-streaming future we’re just not ready for

Large 8-inch screen ; Triggers with haptic feedback

Unwieldy to hold ; Constant latency issues ; Selective Bluetooth support ; No way to stream videos

Between latency issues, selective Bluetooth support, and the inability to stream content from services like Netflix, Hulu and YouTube due to DRM rules, the Portal just couldn’t deliver an enjoyable experience or one I’d feel comfortable recommending.
