The most exciting DVD player we've seen for some time. But can it rival Blu-ray?
Excellent upscaling ; Good DVD player ; Great value
In other respects, this player is a 'no-frills' budget model
As far as DVDs are concerned, this is one of the ultimate decks out there to make the most of your collection

It's not HD but it's still one of the most accomplished DVD players we've seen
‘Sharp’ mode offers incredibly detailed pictures ; naturally vibrant colours ; smooth, stable motion ; nice styling
Sound could do with just a little more refinement
It’s not HD, but it’s one of the best affordable DVD players we’ve seen

With the battle for Blu-ray and HD DVD over, Toshiba has changed its tack and launched a new upscaling DVD player, but does it have want to takes to recapture ground lost? We get watching to find out. At £120 the Toshiba XD-E500 is an impressive...
Upscaling capabilities
Can't show the technology in action
At £120 the Toshiba XD-E500 is an impressive upscaling DVD player that is not only affordable but will go some way to revitalising your DVD collection.

But the Toshiba XD-E500's ability to upconvert DVD for up to 1080p resolution displays and a trio of special image-enhancement settings can add some HD-like zing to standard discs, Toshiba contends.
The Toshiba XD-E500 is a solid upconverting DVD player, even with the extra settings turned off, and the sharp feature definitely adds detail. But due to the player's £120 suggested price tag - roughly twice that of other upconverting players but...

An up-scaling (1080p) DVD player with XDE (eXtended Detail Enhancement) technology, the Toshiba XD-E500 has HDMI and component output. It also has DivX playback (by disc only), Dolby/DTS 5.1 sound and is easily made region-free. The good Toshiba's...
DVD has more lives than a motorway-crossing, chainsaw-juggling cat. The E500 revitalises your digital movie collection once more, giving colour, contrast and especially detail a next-generation pick-me-up. Toshiba XD-E500 is tagged with Toshiba...

HD DVD is dead, but can Toshiba still take a bite out of Blu-ray?
Genuinely sets new upscaling standards / Supports DiVX / Runs silently
Expensive for a DVD player / Rather cheaply built / Doesn’t play Blu-ray
It’s also worth experimenting with the E500’s alternative Colour and Contrast modes, which focus on making colours more lifelike and details in dark areas more obvious respectively. But we always came back to the Sharp setting in the end

If you want a DVD player from an established brand at low price, look no further than the SD-260E. Shop around online and you can find this basic player for as little as £30.
Great features, Solid performance, Good all-rounder, Price, Easy to use, Good picture quality
No multimedia performance, No HDMI, Uninspired design
If you're strapped for cash and want an uncomplicated movie machine that does the basics well, this is a great choice

Revolutionary upconversion, or marketing hot air?

The Toshiba XD-E500-K-TY is a DVD upscaler that delivers great image quality.
Very good at upscaling DVDs
Only half the price of an entry-level Blu-ray player with built-in DVD upscaler, no analog 7.1-channel audio outputs
The Toshiba XD-E500-K-TY provides excellent DVD upscaling for high-definition TVs. However, make sure you're certain that you don't want to fork out a bit more for a Blu-ray player instead.
