A Blu-ray player for under £250 from Sony - what's that catch?
Expert review by (stuff.tv)
The new BDP-S300 is appealingly priced and broadly capable, especially with pictures – but it really ought to be much more than that
Cinema buffs will be dismayed by the lack of hi-def audio support, but otherwise the S300 is a fine buy

As one of the major players in the Blu-ray vs. HD DVD format war, we weren't surprised when Sony announced a price drop for the BDP-S300 to the relatively low list price of $500. Despite the fact that we've been wowed by Blu-ray's image quality, price...
Excellent picture quality on Blu-ray and DVD; DVD upconversion up to 1080p; HDMI output.
Slow load times, particularly unbearable on newer BD Java discs like Pirates of the Caribbean ; some minor video performance issues; no Ethernet port for firmware upgrades.
The BDP-S300 is a decent choice if you're limiting yourself to a relatively cheap, standard-design Blu-ray player, but everyone else should consider the competition.

I have used this for several weeks, however only around ten days ago did the HDMI cable arrive. Do not try using a Blu Ray player without the HDMI cable as you will hear music, sound effects but no speech when using Composite cables supplied.
A couple of recent reports say that within three years we will all be using Blu-ray, well if the quality of sound and video I achieved using this unit and the Sony TV (reviewed four days ago) are anything to go by I say yes please. Once you have...

To rub salt in the wound, the BDP-S300 is also specified as Profile 1.0, which means some Blu-ray extras will remain tantalisingly out of reach.
Excellent HD and DVD pictures
Limited hi-res audio support, Profile 1.0

Lacks features, but excellent Blu-ray pictures for the price ..
The Sony BDB-S300 lacks some high end features, notably the ability to deliver any form of high definition sound, but it delivers an excellent high definition picture for the price.

The BDP-S300 is an excellent value Blu-ray player, delivering a great feature list for a much more affordable price than most advanced units.
Good value for money, great high-definition playback including 24Hz support
Slightly long lag times with Blu-ray playback and power-up, lack of support for Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD audio codecs

We know, we know, we're really late on this one -- thanks Sony -- but around here we think it's important to review every Blu-ray player. And we're sure there...

Sony's BDP-S300 Blu-ray Disc (BD) Player delivers admirable picture and sound quality, and, as with many BD players, it can upconvert regular DVD movies to 1080p format. It can also play back multimedia files recorded onto relatively spacious (and...
Plays JPEG and MP3 files on DVDs. Supports 24-Hz output with Blu-ray movies. Provides basic picture control settings and presets.
Slow disc load times with some Blu-ray movies. No 24-Hz output with DVD video. No bitstream audio output (HDMI).
Sony's least-expensive Blu-ray Disc player isn't a speed demon, but it delivers solid detail and a pleasing viewing experience.
