Samsung DVD-R135 review

A well-priced partner to your HD-ready TV

Affordable ; Very little MPEG noise

No digital tuner ; LP and EP modes best avoided

The price is attractive, but too many cost-cutting compromises have been made to recommend it

Samsung DVD-R135 review

Set-top DVD recorders have gone from being an exciting innovation to being one step less boring than VCRs, and even the addition of upscaling technology can't save them. But although it may not inspire rampant gear lust, Samsung's DVD-R135, with its...

Relatively inexpensive; HDMI upscaling to 480p, 720p, and 1080i; flexible recording length; FireWire input; DivX support; solid disc compatibility; adjustable length commercial skip.

No support for recording on DVD-RAM or dual-layer discs; HDMI performance isn't as good as that of some stand-alone players.

The Samsung DVD-R135 is a relatively inexpensive and stylish DVD recorder with HDMI upscaling, but it's not quite as good as the competition.

A decent enough DVD recorder, but the lack of a digital tuner is a big letdown

HDMI cable included, easy to find recordings, wide range of supported formats

Analogue tuner

Disc compatibility was solid overall. It was able to playback all types of recorded DVDs, including DVD-RAM and DVDs with MP3s on them. This is in contrast to the disc compatibility problems we've continued to have on Panasonic recorders. If you have a...
