Philips DVDR5570H review

Say goodbye to adverts with this flexible hard-disk combi

Time Shift Buffer ; Commercial Block ; Appealing design ; Wealth of features ; Good remote control

Some picture issues ; Basic editing options ; No Freeview Playback

Lacks the pick-up-and-play quality of the latest Panasonics, but there’s lots to admire and plenty of great features

A decent DVD/HDD machine is let down by poor usability and sluggish control - it's also at the top end of the price bracket

Easy on the eye ; clear remote control ; good specs ; faithful recordings ; decent DVD picture

Cumbersome control system ; menus are confusing ; time lag when selecting channels or recordings

The other feature guaranteed to bring a smile to your face is Commercial Block, which automatically puts chapter markers at the start and end of adverts so you can skip right past them at the touch of a button.

Looks, Time Shift Buffer, remote, recording quality

No series recording, basic editing

As recomended by Philips it has provided all that I want, with Freeview without bying a completely new Television system.

It takes a little time to get to know what to do. I think this could be a little better

Only had it a couple of weeks so still getting used to it, overall though very good. First HDD like this (have sky plus) been good to transfer some of my older recordings off the sky box to this, freeing up space.

slow to start up and move between HDD to USB etc. Needs to be on if watching sky as the picture quality has dropped. Bit of a time delay in broadcast now so if it's on in the lounge and someone is watching in the kitchen the sound delay can be...

Easy to use, once you get the hang of it. Very fast copying from hard drive to DVD.

*The only line of recorders on the market which allow you to record 5.1 sound - however, they cant be written to DVD and will only save as stereo if burned to a DVD. *An excellent upscaler of normal DVDs. *Looks very smart.

*Slow to react occasionally. *Not being able to burn 5.1 sound onto DVD. *Cannot simply store a DVD on your hard drive, original or home made holiday videos. *Limited editing options.

I've only had the product for a week but most things seem to be in working order. the recording function is great, just one touch of a button et voila! haven't tested most of the other functions yet but so far so good! oh, and it looks pretty too!

very slow when changing channel (about 4 to 5 seconds of blank screen inbetween), the tv guide is unpredictable - left the device in standby mode the day i set it up and when i turned it on most of the channel listings were there. however, since then...
