We love our Panasonic DMR-ES40V DVD Recorder: from a non-techie

We bought this unit because we needed a new DVD player. But the primary reason we wanted it was because I have lots of old VHS tapes of family members. Many of the VHS tapes are at least 15 years old and I'm sure they are not going to last much longer....

Wonderful unit for VHS and DVD viewing and dubbing.

Might be considered pricey at first.

OK DVD player, otherwise clunky

Purchased this in January 2005 almost solely for the VHS to DVD dub feature. My VHS tapes had, since I got my first DVD player 5 years ago, been rotting in a steamer trunk that doubled as a TV stand. I knew I would get VHS quality when I dubbed the ...

Model DMR ES40V

The very first VCR I purchased was a Panasonic. It was the first unit ever sold and was expensive. It did a great job . This unit is also good. The manual shows how to get started step by step. However, once I turned on the TV, the unit pretty ...

Picture quality, DVD's easier to store than tapes, pause button, ease of operation

Limits on dubbing (might be my fault) occasional freezing when finalizing.

panasonic unable to fix or replace broken unit in 6 weeks (so far)

I purchased this unit in December 05. It's imperfect, but I was basically satisfied, and didn't even have criticisms for the directions that so many reviewers seem to dislike. Then the unit died in April. It was a complete and sudden failure. It ...

It's a mixed bag, but a pretty nice bag...

I've always liked dual decks, even before there were DVD/VCR combos. Years ago I thought the coolest thing would be one of those GoVideo dual deck VCRs... Boy was I wrong, what a colossal piece of crap. You can read about that experience ...

Compatible with all single layer formats including DVD-RAM,Good Value, Easy Dubbing, Loaded with features.

Automatic dubbing only, no editing. Locks up periodically, sometimes with fatal results.

I must have bought a lemon

Bought this for Christmas 2005 and it worked perfectly for a week or so. I was able to dub home movies to DVD. Could also dub to DVD copies of movies and sports on VHS which I taped from TV. Out of curiosity I also tried dubbing store-bought VHS movies...

Plays VHS tapes and DVDs and that's about it.

Unable to dub anything as all home movies shown as "protected"

Panasonic DMR-ES40VS DVD Recorder / VCR Combo with FireWire (DV) Input

A new Panasonic DMR-ES40VS is a DVD-recorder and a VCR combo that sells for less than $300 and is an update to the Panasonic DMR-ES30VS. The device records to DVD-RAM discs, ...

The best rated DVD Recorder, only better!

Okay, I purchased this yesterday. So my evaluation is only based on all the tests I've run with it in the last 24 hours. Frankly, I'm very impressed with the unit. I really didn't think they'd come out with a DVD recorder that "any idiot" could use ...

Easily, and beautifully, converts VHS to DVD.

An occasional lock-up needing a reboot.

Great hardware, but one AWFUL software flaw

Before I get to the good parts, the major flaw is this: I cannot figure a way transfer a home video to DVD without it butchering the contents by breaking up the footage into dozens of segments (titles) that overlap very poorly. I'd be happy with just a...

Picture quality, quiet fan, many good hardware/software features.

Major flaw - internal VCR won't transfer to DVD without sloppily dividing segments.
