Panasonic DMR-E50 review: Panasonic DMR-E50

Relatively inexpensive; excellent recording quality in XP and SP modes; simultaneous recording and playback with DVD-RAM; MP3 CD playback.

No IR blaster for cable or satellite control; soft recording quality in EP mode; no FireWire input.

The least-expensive DVD recorder on the market lacks some key add-ons, but it performs its basic tasks well.

Panasonic DMR-E30, DMR-HS2

The progressive-scan Panasonic DMR-E30 is a DVD player that also records to rewritable DVD-RAM discs ($8 each) or write-once DVD-Rs ($5 each).

Panasonic DMR-E30 review: Panasonic DMR-E30

Panasonic DMR-E30

Variable recording time; improved MPEG noise reduction; progressive-scan output; lower price.

Lackluster remote; no thumbnail menus; lacks FireWire connectivity.

Much improved and a little less costly than its predecessor, the DMR-E30S may not be a total bargain, but it has a lot to recommend it.
