Denon DVD-1940 review

Denon's player offers wide compatibility as well as a reasonable scaler

Relatively tidy scaling up to 1080p ; strong SD images too

Stereo playback doesn’t quite match the Cambridge ; some jagged lines caused by scaling

Despite some noisy pictures, this is a competent and likeable player

Denon DVD-1940 review

A discernable step up from the Denon 1930 in picture quality, but not sound

Smart style and good build, as ever ; class-leading picture has improved yet further ; plays DVD-A and SACD in solid style

Movie sound lacks a little get up and go

While we welcome the small improvements in picture quality, we do notice a drop-off sonically – over to you

Denon DVD-1940 review

No, it's not an episode of The World At War. It's Denon's revamped, 1080p-upscaling DVD player

This tweaked and tidied update of Denon’s award-winning 1930 DVD player boasts even better picture quality but less impressive surround sound

Denon DVD-1940

The Denon DVD-1940 is a worthwhile successor to to the 1930, with great DVD pictures. If the upscaler was up to snuff it would be perfect.

Class-leading DVD pictures ; Good music playback ; Elegant styling

Upscaling is worse than SD ; Only HDMI version 1.1 ; Same price as the PS3

Using an SACD of Peter Gabriel's greatest hits showed that, to our ears at least, this is the superior HD audio format, with "Solsbury Hill" showing great detail and a reined-in bass drum

Denon DVD-1940

Very sexy, great up-scaler and reads all formats. Sound & image quality are excellent and the price we paid was amazing.

Could be a little slimmer in a perfect world.

Good build, picture and sound quality.

Remote has too many small buttons, 90% of which I will never use.

Generally fine no problems

'Draw' feels really flimsy, box rather tinny
