Pentax K-50 review

A weatherproof all-rounder well-suited to beginners

Weatherproof ; 100% field of view viewfinder ; 6fps shooting

Fixed screen ; Noisy operation ; No Wi-Fi

The best thing about this camera is its weatherproofing credentials, so to get the most of it, partner it with the 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 WR (weather resistant) optic.

Pentax K-50 and K-500: Lots of photo features but photos disappoint

Both stuffed with semimanual shooting options, the weather-sealed K-50 and the K-500 seem like great deals. But they just don't come through on the photo quality.

The ; features a weather-sealed body that's unique in its price class, an interesting set of shooting features, support for AA-size batteries, and a relatively nice viewfinder. Plus, it comes in colors, if that appeals to you. The cheaper ; has the...

Image quality and performance, while acceptable, don't match the competition's, and the cameras lack an articulated LCD. Also, both the shutter and the lens make a lot of noise.

A reasonable option for an entry-level dSLR, the Pentax K-50 should satisfy if you need the weather-sealed design. But while acceptable, it and its cheaper sibling the K-500 lag behind the competition in image quality and performance.

Pentax K-50 review

  (Rating Hidden)

The Pentax K-50 is a dead-ringer for its entry-level sibling, the K-500, but is water-resistant, dustproof and cold-resistant, with no fewer than 81 weatherproof seals. This makes it slightly heavier, but could be a camera-saver if you like to shoot...

Pentax K-50 review

Once again, Pentax has created a camera that enthusiast photographers will enjoy using. Its bodymay be polycarbonate, but don't let that fool you. The camera is strong and the weather-sealing gives you confidence that the camera can be used in rugged,...

Pentax K-50

This is quite a meaty DSLR kit unit, however for me a little spoilt by its white colour, while this may be being picky – again – it does draw attention to the unit and if you are taking images in a ‘less savoury area' it could mean you are targeted.

The Pentx K50 Digital SLR (DSLR) camera weighs 885grams and measures 12.5x9.5x15cm with the supplied 18-55mm lens attached. Starting with the rear the 6.2x4.5cm TFT shows what settings you have selected and after shooting using the viewfinder shows the...

Pentax K-50 Review

The Pentax K-50 is virtually identical to the K-500, albeit boasting a few extra features. Is it worth the extra cash?

Pentax K-50 review - Semi-pro features for an entry level price

Pentax DSLR offers semi pro features including weatherproofing for an entry level price

Camera body and supplied lens are both weatherproofed against the elements, whilst internal sensor shift shake reduction mechanism means that specially image stabilised lenses are not required, very swift to power up and auto focus

Body design reflects price in being chunky with big buttons and relatively frill free, LCD is fixed rather than angle adjustable, noisy mechanics of zoom lens if used in automatic mode

The Pentax K-50 is so nearly a great camera, but a slightly bland design and lack of adjustable LCD when used as viewfinder let it down. There are more svelte alternatives with that feature and others that match it in this price range. However if you...

Pentax K-50

Pentax has a knack of making its cameras stand out from the crowd, and from the all-white K-30 to the colourful compact Q range, they always catch the eye; the latest K-50 D-SLR – its most advanced entry-level model yet – keeps this tradition going.

Features like the in-body Shake Reduction and weather resistance give the K-50’s similarly priced rivals a real run for their money. The fast write times and speedy AF performance really impressed us and the only minor gripes we could find were the...
