Olympus OM-D E-M5

Olympus has gone all retro with its latest compact system camera, and boy does it impress.

Super-fast AF and excellent image quality ; Lots of features and user customisation ; Easy to use and solid build quality ; Good quality EVF and tiltable screen

Neck strap can get in the way ; Plastic buttons feel a bit cheap

Olympus OM-D E-M5 review

Is this retro-styled Micro Four Thirds camera worth its high price?

Excellent viewfinder ; Tilting touchscreen ; Customisable dials and buttons ; High image quality at low ISOs ; New art filters

Plastic unresponsive buttons ; No in-built flash ; Odd (sound) emitted

Three years after making its first entrance into the compact system camera arena with the PEN E-P1, Olympus has gone back to its roots again to produce the OM-D E-M5, with its retro styling owed to its analogue predecessor.

Olympus OM-D E-M5

Olympus's latest Micro Four Thirds release - the OM-D E-M5 - builds on the brand's heritage. Like the digital PEN (E-P) series that came before it, the OM-D is a digital reimagining of the original Olympus OM series - a 35mm film camera series that was...

It’s got the look, innovative stabilisation system, fast autofocus, weather-sealed design, customisation and detailed menus, Micro Four Thirds opens door to many lenses

Poor battery life, pricey, poor low-light autofocus, ISO 200 is lowest sensitivity, image quality similar to Panasonic G3, continuous/tracking AF not a DSLR-beater, did we mention the price?

Sleek, stylish and a classy performer – there’s not much to dislike about the Olympus OM-D E-M5.

First Look: Olympus OM-D E-M5

The Olympus OM-D is a new line of Micro Four Thirds cameras, pitched above the current Pen line. The E-M5 is the first model in this new range, which Olympus is pushing out with the tagline "the beginning of something new". We leave the Olympus OM-D...

Plenty of controls, packed full of features, Livebulb is great fun, stabilisation seems very good

Perhaps it's all a bit too cramped, especially when using the viewfinder, number of features might be too overwhelming

Olympus OM-D E-M5 review

The OM name once signified the pinnacle of Olympus' SLR expertise – now the moniker has been resurrected for its most advanced Micro Four Thirds cam yet. Can the E-M5 do its ancestors proud?

Very fast autofocus, Sublime picture and video quality, Not as big as it looks

Buttons feel a bit naff

Olympus OM-D E-M5 review

Much as it did when launching the PEN series of Micro Four Thirds cameras, Olympus trots out another beloved film brand and updates it for the digital age. This time out, though, Olympus frames enthusiasts squarely in the scene. Olympus' reincarnation...

A dust-and-weather-sealed design distinguishes the Olympus OM-D E-M5 from the rest of the interchangeable-lens crowd, and its class-leading performance doesn't hurt, either. Plus, it's got an interesting, relatively streamlined shooting design.

The photo quality is solid, but not outstanding, especially if you shoot only JPEG.

If you're looking for something a lot better, faster, and more sophisticated than a point-and-shoot that can stand up to your adventures, the Olympus OM-D E-M5 is a great choice.

Olympus OM-D E-M5 review

The top panel, as you're looking down at it, features an exposure mode dial on the left side and what Olympus calls a main dial on the right side. There's also a sub-dial around the shutter release. You can easily rotate either of the right-side dials...

Olympus has been a leader in the Compact System Camera revolution, and the OM-D E-M5 will solidify that position. It is a good-looking, well-designed, highly capable camera. I recommend the 12-50 mm zoom lens with the body, which currently lists for...

Olympus OM-D E-M5 review

I consider the styling and build quality of the OM-D E-M5 as being equal to the best compact system cameras around, especially with the grip and battery pack attached. Also, by using the micro four thirds to OM mount adapter, old OM lenses can find a...

Panasonic Lumix GX7 Vs Olympus OM-D E-M5 Review

When introduced, the Panasonic Lumix GX7 came with some bold claims, including better noise performance than the Olympus OM-D E-M5. As these two cameras are available at a similar price, and have a similar set of features, such as 9fps continuous...

Tilting EVF, Great screen, Focus Peaking, Wi-Fi built-in, Improved ISO performance, Weather sealed, 5-axis image stabilisation, Excellent JPEG output, WB options, Very quiet shutter

Loud mechanical shutter - electronic available, In body IS not available in video mode, Olympus menu system, Front grip
