Olympus OM-D E-M1X review

The pro-grade DSLR killer?

Excellent handling in both orientations ; Speedy autofocus ; Highly responsive touchscreen ; Image stabilization works brilliantly ; Great 4K video with low rolling shutter

Viewfinder can be unclear in low light ; Noise appears early in ISO range ; Menu system still a bit awkward ; AF tracking can lose subject easily

Where to begin? A solid build, great handling, speedy autofocus, excellent response, lovely 4K video, sound image stabilization... Sure, there isn't quite enough here to justify such a hefty premium over the existing E-M1 Mark II or some rival models,...

Olympus OM-D E-M1X review

Olympus's pricey new flagship gets a hell of a lot right

Robust build and great handling ; Very effective image stabilisation ; Super responsive and very fast autofocus ; Great 4K video quality

Small sensor not always ideal ; Better viewfinders on some cheaper cameras ; No status LCD on the top plate ; Very expensive

The EM1X is an exemplary camera is many ways, and some of its tricks are mighty impressive. It is, however, priced unrealistically against both the previous OM-D E-M1 Mark II and increasingly strong competitors.

Olympus OM-D E-M1X review

The Olympus OM-D E-M1X is the ultimate sports, action and wildlife camera for professional Micro Four Thirds users. However, it can't quite match the level of AF reliability offered by its full frame competitors.

'Let's not join 'em, let's beat 'em!' - is what I imagine someone at Olympus shouting when the E-M1X was conceived. Because while other brands seem busy prioritizing large-sensor systems, Olympus put its efforts into launching the ultimate Micro Four...

Olympus OM-D E-M1X

The Olympus OM-D E-M1X camera features a truly rugged, professional build, but its Micro Four Thirds image sensor lags behind the full-frame competition.

Sturdy, all-weather build. Five-axis sensor stabilization. Vari-angle touch LCD. Integrated vertical grip. 60fps Raw capture. Dual batteries and memory card slots. 4K video capture.

Expensive. Tracking not available at top burst rate. Relatively small Raw buffer. Incremental improvements. Underwhelming EVF.

Bottom Line: The Olympus OM-D E-M1X camera features a truly rugged, professional build, but its Micro Four Thirds image sensor lags behind the full-frame competition.

Olympus OM-D E-M1X review in progress

The Olympus OM-D E-M1X is a more powerful dual-grip evolution of the E-M1 II. Aimed at sports shooters it promises improved AF, including advanced subject recognition, along with the highest-ever rated image stabilization system.

Olympus OM-D E-M1X

Tired of lugging a huge DSLR and massive glass around stadiums, arenas, racetracks, and remote locations? Wish you could ditch the monopod and shoot handheld all day? Hate having to decide whether or not to grab your camera's bulky rain gear?

Olympus OM-D E-M1X hands-on: A Pro-ready portable powerhouse

There are just some things that seem to be mutually exclusive. Night and day, power and portability, complexity and reliability. So when someone comes up with a way to bring opposites together, it's almost always regarded as nothing short of genius. It...
