Nikon Coolpix P520 review

Superzoom cameras tend to be pricey bits of kit these days. Not so for the Nikon Coolpix P520 - this Coolpix sure doesn't hold back on the zoom, yet cuts back on the price compared to many of its competitors. We were already fond of the previous...

Affordable compared to rivals, small body but big and varied zoom range, image stabilisation, full vari-angle LCD, low ISO shots bright and colourful

Tricky to shoot at 1000mm because of feature restraints, autofocus at longer focal lengths is a little slow, no raw, image quality not pushing forward

All things considered and the P520 is, in general, a decent superzoom camera. We like the small size, big zoom range, image stabilisation and new vari-angle screen - but even all that's just not enough to see it prevail as a class leader.

Nikon Coolpix P520: An all-around very good package

More an incremental update than an entirely new camera, the P520 is still a very good megazoom for its price and features.

Give the ; plenty of light and it can turn out some excellent photos throughout its 42x zoom range. It has a lot of shooting options for those who like to fiddle with settings or straight snapshooters; a nice flip-out rotating LCD; and built-in GPS and...

Its autofocus system is slow when the lens is zoomed in, especially when compared with other models in its class; battery life is short; and the camera feels cheaply constructed.

More point-and-shoot than dSLR in terms of features and performance than some competing high-end megazooms, the Nikon Coolpix P520 is a very good camera for those after a big zoom range, better control over results, and fine picture quality.

Nikon Coolpix P520 Review

The Nikon Coolpix P520 was announced in January 2013 and is a bridge camera with a 42x optical zoom lens, 18 megapixel backlit COMS sensor and a 3.2 inch vari-angle LCD screen.

42x optical zoom lens, Vari-angle LCD monitor, Full 1080p HD movie recording with stereo sound, Built-in GPS, 1cm minimum focusing distance, Auto HDR mode, Easy Panorama 360°/180°, 7 fps continuous shooting, Plenty of rubberised grip, Decent image...

EVF is quite small and has a low resolution, Battery life expectancy is a little low, Slowish focusing and shutter response, Purple fringing and chromatic aberration in images when shooting at long lengths

Nikon COOLPIX P520 review

The Nikon Coolpix P520 boasts the most powerful lens in Coolpix camera yet, incorporating a 42x optical zoom lens which provides an effective focal range of 24-1000mm. How does the rest of the...

GPS system can work well (if tended to), excellent LCD, price, overall image quality

GPS can deliver erroneous results (and sometimes none at all), build quality

Nikon Coolpix P520 ( Black)

For the Coolpix P520, Nikon's flagship megazoom, very little has changed from its predecessor, the P510 . Nikon put in a new 18-megapixel backside-illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor, but it has the same 42x, f3.0-5.9, 24-1,000mm lens. The bulk of its other...

Nikon Coolpix P520 review:

Editors' note: Several of the design, features, and shooting options are identical between the Nikon Coolpix P520 and the Coolpix P510 we reviewed earlier, so readers of the earlier review may experience some deja vu when reading the same sections below.
