Nikon D40x

This is Nikon's answer to the EOS 400D. So is it a yes or a no?

In the D40x Nikon may finally have got the entry-level DSLR that can give Canon a run for its money while holding off Sony’s advance. It is, by an admittedly narrow margin, a better camera than the EOS 400D in many respects, including the crucial area...

Nikon D40x review

Can the successor to the D40 outdo its cheaper rivals?

Excellent JPEG quality

Too expensive ; Convoluted controls

The D40x produces superb colour images, but why is it so expensive?

Nikon D40x Digital SLR camera

Hot on the heals of the D40 (around 4 months in fact) comes the D40x a 10-megapixel update of the D40 that in all but a few areas is identical to its predecessor. As a result, this review needs to be read along with the D40 test posted a few weeks ago...

Handling, design, 2.5-inch colour LCD, USB2 (Hi-Speed) connectivity, image quality

Top plate data LCD missing, no lens motor in body (non-AF-S/AF-I lenses manual focus only), no depth of field preview, no exposure, or white balance bracketing, more noise

The image quality, handling, responsiveness and features strike the same great balance for its target market as on the D40 but, I for one don’t feel the extra £150 for the higher resolving sensor makes total sense for you, the buying public. Yes, it...

Nikon D40x digital SLR camera

If you carry around a laptop so you can show clients your latest marketing forecasts, you can save yourself the bother by using Google Spreadsheets.

Despite Nikon's "nobody could better the D40 so we decided to do it ourselves" flippancy, owners of the D40 shouldn't feel pressure to update, the Nikon D40x version's additions have generally been made to bring the camera's specs up to match...

Nikon D40x

With a resolution of 10 megapixels and a sensitivity range from 100 to 1600 ISO, the Nikon D40x is an excellent D-SLR for those entering the world of digital photography, with superb image quality and a very fast shutter response. In a kit package with...

Nikon D40x

For us, the D40x doesn't quite marry the D40's combination of user friendliness, image quality and build to price as successfully as its predecessor, and is unashamedly a product born from the desire/need to be competitive in a crowded and cut-throat...

Four million more pixels to play with than its baby brother the Nikon D40, improved capture rate (up fom 2.5fps), plus longer life battery (up from 470 shots from a single charge)

These upgraded features are not particularly significant to existing users and don't make a massive difference to operation or image quality, though they do bring the product into sync with the line ups of its rivals (notably Canon's 400D)

Nikon D40x Digital SLR

The Nikon D40x Digital SLR is one of the cheapest 10 megapixel Digital SLRs available, with ISO100 - 3200, it has a 2.5 inch screen, and a Nikon kit lens.

Excellent image quality ; Very good Nikon Digital kit lens ; Very good 2.5" screen, viewable from most angles ; Quick performance, quick switch on, continuous shooting etc ; Comfortable, compact, solid black body ; Little or no Red-eye in photos with...

The Nikon D40x is a compact 10 megapixel Digital SLR that produces great image quality, with very low noise levels. Images are bright, detailed, and colourful with lots of saturation, and the camera produces pleasing JPEG images. This makes it a great...
