Nikon D40 review

The budget SLR that proves there's more to life than pixels

Excellent image quality ; Large viewfinder ; Big LCD screen

Small body ; Fiddly menu ; No top screen

A great camera let down by a sluggish interface

Nikon D40 digital SLR camera

At the time of writing this review, just 4 months after the launch of the D40, Nikon had announced the D40x (its review to follow shortly), a 10-megapixel upgrade of this model and one designed to oust Canon's EOS 400D from its perch. In getting to...

Good price, good handling, design, large 2.5-inch colour LCD, USB2 (Hi-Speed) connectivity, great image quality, good value for money

No top plate data LCD, no lens motor in body (non-AF-S/AF-I lenses manual focus only), no depth of field preview, no exposure or white balance bracketing

The D40 is an almost perfect DSLR for those first time DSLR buyers on a more modest budget, anyone who wants a compact and lightweight DSLR or those moving across from film or trading up from a compact model. Image quality, the handling, responsiveness...

Nikon D40 DSLR camera - FIRST LOOK

Nikon's latest offering to the digital SLR market is the D40, designed around the theme "Simply Nikon". Smaller and lighter than the previous entry-level model, the D50, the D40 costs just £450. The general impression of the camera is that it's a...

Nikon D40

The D40 SLR digicam picks up where the D50 left off, and on paper, little seems to have changed. But the specifications don't tell you just how much things have evolved.

It may look like a refreshed D50, but the D40 boasts an enhanced, intuitive workflow that encourages experimentation. There's plenty of scope for both casual and advanced users. Highly recommended.

Many people believe that high image resolution is synonymous with high image quality, but this is not always the case. High quality optics, first class image processing and ample image resolution is usually the best combination for optimum image...

Nikon D40 Review

Small, lightweight and with a low price tag of £450 with lens, the Nikon D40 is certainly a tempting proposition for those on a budget. Dan Lezano finds out if this 6.1-megapixel SLR has what it takes to make it a hit with the beginner

Two things are clearly obvious on picking up the camera. The first is that the D40 is small and lightweight; the second is that, despite the low price, it’s still very well made. Despite its small size, the D40 is very easy to hold, thanks to its...

Nikon D40: 2008 Review

With today's economic climate, money is tight. Yesteryear's Nikon D40 comes in cheap, but how does it stand up by today's standards?

The price ; Deceptively solid build ; Good image quality at high ISO ; Potentially good picture quality ; That price again

Small LCD ; Dated design means no live view ; Soft images as standard

Despite the low cost, the Nikon D40 does not seem built down to a price. It feels nicely robust in the hand; light and plastic, but solid polycarbonate. The 2.5" rear LCD is bright and doesn't seem small unless you compare it to later designs. The menu...
