The Nikon P950 is a superzoom bridge camera for wildlife snappers. But is it a big enough leap over its predecessor?
Huge zoom Fully articulating screen Raw format shooting 4K video recording
Relatively small sensor A bit unwieldy No touchscreen Single UHS-I card slot
The P950 is a solid evolution from its predecessor, with a good set of upgrades. If you absolutely must have 83x optical zoom and mostly shoot wildlife, then its reach and quality make it worth considering. But the flagship P1000 isn't much more...

We review the Nikon Coolpix P950, Nikon's new 83x optical zoom lens camera, it features 4K video recording, raw shooting, manual controls, and of course a massive optical zoom lens!
The Nikon Coolpix P950 is Nikon's update to the P900, and offers the same 83x optical zoom lens, but improves it with 4K video, a flash hot-shoe, microphone socket, and raw shooting. We test the P950 in a variety of places and find that the optical...

The Nikon Coolpix P950 is an appealing camera for wildlife specialists, but most won't need its exceptional zoom power.

The Nikon Coolpix P950 is a powerful superzoom compact camera, built around a 24-2000mm equivalent zoom lens. Successor to the popular P900, the P950 adds an improved EVF, Raw capture and 4K video. So is it worth $800?

83 times the zoom is not to be missed, but it comes with some challenges.
Extreme zoom with good brightness and relatively good sharpness. Large and sharp viewfinder, good image stabilization. 4K video without cropping.
Not very fast, lacks touch screen and zoom ring. Lots of high noise image noise. Moderate battery life.
The compromises seem to be in line when you want both in a bag and a sack. You have to be willing to make some compromises to get as much zoom as the Coolpix P950 can offer. 83 x zoom is not an everyday occurrence, and offers some optical challenges,...

The P950 arrives as a modernised P900. In this video, we explore the P950 - is it a major upgrade over the P900 or a saving over the P1000?
4K Video ; RAW files
Weaker battery than the P900 (290 shots to a previous 350) ; Costs more than a P1000 if you shop around ; Same exact lens as the P900

The Nikon P950 with its 83x optical zoom will get you closer than almost any other camera, but that's its only selling point
83x optical zoom ; Portability vs. zoom reach ; Good ergonomics ; 4K video and quality EVF
Disappointing image quality ; Do you really need 83x zoom? ; Huge price tag
The Nikon Coolpix P950 excels for its colossal zoom range and lens quality, but its image quality is disappointing in 2020. Only if you absolutely must have this much zoom reach is it worth considering, and even then the price is tough to justify.
