Fujifilm X20

A beautiful retro-styled camera and an improved take on the X10.

Strong all-round image performance, Excellent design and build quality, Great to use

Exposure compensation dial easy to knock, Noise reduction overly aggressive, Limited viewfinder

Fuji X20 review

Fuji puts X-Pro1 technology in an X10 body

Retro design ; Manual controls ; Film simulation modes ; Viewfinder

No touchscreen ; Creative filters can't be shot in raw format ; Fairly limited zoom range

With the X20, Fuji continues its dominance in the corner of the market reserved for high-end compact cameras with superb image quality that exude retro cool. No other manufacturer manages to mix those two qualities together quite so well as Fuji.

Fujifilm X20 review

The Fujifilm X20 is an overhaul of the X10 but retains the same classic chassis

Gorgeous design ; Activated by twisting lens ; Optical viewfinder

Small sensor ; Low resolution ; Pricey

Fujifilm X20

When it comes to high-end compact cameras there are now plenty to choose from on the market. But the Fujifilm X20 offers something that bit different: its retro styled, all dressed up in a trendy silver - or black if you'd prefer - yet completes its...

Low ISO images are sharp and class-leading, retro style, great build quality, bright and sharp f/2.0-2.8 zoom lens, zooming optical viewfinder (OVF) with digital overlay outshines competitors, approximate hyperfocal distance display in MF

No ND filter, 85 per cent OVF only, OVF has some distortion, focus areas won't always display in OVF (unavoidable design constraint), AF-C not up to scratch

The Fujifilm X20 is not only the camera that irons out its predecessor's orb-related imaging issues, it's also the camera that pushes image quality up a notch to class-leading levels.

Fujifilm X20 review

Some cameras are made to be practical; get the job done, move on. Some cameras are made to be loved. The Fujifilm X20 is in the latter camp. That's not to say it doesn't take great pictures. In the right hands with the right settings its picture...

Gorgeous retro styling, Fast autofocus, Manual controls

Limited zoom, Flat images in some conditions

Fujifilm X20 finds its niche

It's a compact camera predominantly designed around the experience of taking photos. Why not?

A new sensor lets the ; deliver better photo quality than its predecessor, and tweaks to the design improve the shooting experience significantly.

The lens-twist-to-turn-on is getting old fast, and the feature set provides just the basics. Plus the video quality disappoints.

The Fujifiilm X20 is a great choice for people looking for a well-designed photographer's camera, but the basic feature set and disappointing video might not be for everyone.

Fujifilm X20 review

The X20 stands out from other enthusiast compacts for many positive reasons, not least of which is a design marred only by the placement of its exposure compensation dial. Although it may be difficult to distinguish any extra detail in real-world...

Quick review - Fujifilm X20

Fujifilm has been undergoing a revitalisation of sorts, providing a number of strong options in the X-Pro1 and the X-E1. The X20 premium compact builds on this tradition.

Lovely retro looks; manual zoom and not by lever, interesting photo effects, easy to access key functionality, custom settings on the top dial.

Quite big for a compact, lens hood becomes a pain, LCD screen at back slightly small with low resolution, optical viewfinder not always accurate.

Fujifilm X20 review - Retro-style camera with solid build

Retro styled premium compact camera with rock solid build and feature set

X20 feels great in the hand thanks to solid mainly metal build, clever function implementation includes optical viewfinder with digital overlay, the fact the camera can be activated or deactivated via a twist of its lens adds a further point of difference

Certain rivals have both a larger sensor and higher resolution for this price, maximum aperture not quite as bright as some competitors’ f/1.4 or f/1.8 optics, smaller LCD screen than many

Still photos don’t always have the same wow, as when the camera was left on auto we occasionally ended up with either under or overexposed shots as we’d expect from a £200 snapper, something that could be solved by a built-in neutral density filter on...
