Offering a 30x optical zoom in a pocketable package, the SX700HS might just be the perfect compact for travellers
30x optical zoom Wi-Fi / NFC Manual control
No touchscreen Can't change AF point Limited control over creative modes
A brilliant camera for holidaying and traveling photographers, while full manual control make it a good choice as a backup compact for DSLR owners.

As the compact camera market continues to shrink, the outlay of new product seems to be surfing a common theme: zoom is increasing in a war waged with fixed-lens smartphone cameras. The Canon PowerShot SX700 HS - the update to the earlier SX280 HS...
Point and shoot ease or full manual control, close-up macro mode, good image stabilisation, decent image quality
Limited autofocus options, no raw capture, 30x zoom limitations at longer extension, no touchscreen, more basic than Panasonic TZ60
With a launch price of £329 the Canon PowerShot SX700 HS might not be a budget buy, but it cleverly undercuts the main competition from Panasonic and Sony by enough to make us stand up and pay attention. It not-so-cleverly also sits behind them by...

When it comes to travel zooms - cameras pocketable in size but with a significant zoom lens squeezed into their designs - there are lots of options out

Though it follows in the path of SX-series models before it, the SX700 HS is almost entirely new and, for the most part, that's a good thing.
Along with its 30x zoom lens, the Canon PowerShot SX700 HS has fun and useful shooting options; built-in Wi-Fi with NFC; a high-resolution LCD; and excellent shooting performance and daylight photo and video quality.
Its low-light (high-ISO) photos could be better and while its battery life is noticeably better than that of its predecessor, you'll still want to keep an extra battery handy for all-day shooting. Canon could have done more with the camera's NFC.
If you're looking for more than just a simple snapshot experience from a compact zoom camera, the Canon PowerShot SX700 HS should be on your short list, despite a couple shortcomings.

The camera maker's top compact megazoom gets a new lens, NFC, and full HD movie capture at 60p.

For what it can do, the SX700 HS provides excellent value for money.

The Canon SX700 HS is a superb all-round camera, suitable for travel, sports, indoor and outdoor social photography and pretty much anything else in between.

Easily pack 30x worth of optical zoom in your pocket
30x optical zoom ; Relatively easy to make manual adjustments ; Good overall image quality
Mode dial location a little awkward ; Some noticeable chromatic aberration ; Wi-Fi feature not great
Canon's PowerShot SX700 HS is a powerful little camera that can be used in a whole heap situations, from regular landscapes to long tele-zooms. It's a fun camera to use and well worth considering, especially if you want a camera for your travels.

Canon sticks to the tried-and-true formula of more megapixels and more zoom for the PowerShot SX700 HS.

The Canon PowerShot SX700 HS has a 30x lens and a lot of features, but image quality suffers in low light.
