Hands-on: The successor to the G1 X arrives

With an SRP of £749, the G1 X Mk II is going to be up against some stiff competition and as such the pressure for it to be just right is particularly high. We look forward to testing it in the near future and seeing if it lives up to expectations.

Canon seems to have returned to top premium compact form with the updated version of its G1 X camera.

Small size, large sensor ; Touchscreen ; Built-in Wi-Fi

High price ; No viewfinder

Canon has made some much needed improvements to the G1X Mark II, but it still occupies a slightly strange space. A great backup camera to your DSLR, it won't fit in your pocket.

Faster, leaner, meaner: the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II represents a considerable overhaul to the series. It's an entirely different beast compared to its predecessor and we salute it for that.

With a couple of exceptions, the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II is very well designed with a functional shooting layout.

The camera is relatively slow and given the price, the photo quality should be better. Also, the grip isn't big enough to maintain a solid hold.

The Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II has some solid capabilities and a standout lens, but the overall experience just doesn't live up to its price.
