Is this the perfect pocket compact?
The Canon IXUS 860 IS is an expensive camera for an 8MP pocket compact, but it justifies it with stylish design, exceptional build quality, class-leading performance and outstanding picture quality. Its wide zoom range provides greater versatility than...

On the face of it, the 860IS looks a mere million-pixel tweak over its 850IS forbear but it has had a few kit changes over that camera and that look significant improvements. As always, I'm not sure simply adding extra pixels helps image quality as the...
Great build, image quality as lower ISOs, responsive, easy to use, good metering and colour, nice lens focal range
Reduced detail due to noise reduction processing, Intrusive noise at higher ISOs, white balance issues in mixed lighting, screen marks easily
The IXUS 860IS is typically well made and very nice to use as well as being very easy to use, noise issues are not helped at higher ISOs by the increase in resolution but over it is an accomplished if pricey snapper.

The 8.0 Megapixel CCD sensor of the Canon Digital IXUS 860 IS captures every scene in crisp detail and high resolution, delivering lab quality photo prints. A generous 3″ PureColour LCD with a scratch-resistant, anti-glare coating and improved colour...

The 8.3-megapixel Canon IXUS 850 IS benefits from a 3in LCD PureColour screen, but loses the viewfinder of the 850 IS.

This is the latest in the excellent Ixus digital camera range, in August 2006 the Ixus 700 won the rarely awarded 5x5 award. Does this latest offering live up to this rarely awarded accolade.
Like all of the Ixus range it is small at 9x6x2cm the last figure the width doubles when the 3.8 to 1 optical zoom lens is fully extended. This is very solidly constructed unit so it weights 120grams. The base has the optional tripod screw, and cover...

I like the Canon IXUS 860 IS. This is a stylish digital camera with a good build quality. There is a large, clear 3 inch LCD screen on the back of the camera. Picture quality is very good in most situations and I am happy to recommend this camera.
Sharpness of photo - build quality and design - red eye correction tool - clear LCD screen
Sun glare
"The Canon IXUS 860 IS is a high class, point and shoot camera. It has a stylish, metal body. Picture quality is up there with the best compact cameras. With a large LCD screen and image stabilisation too, I am happy to recommend this camera."

The IXUS name is a like a brand these days. People will buy the camera because it says IXUS on it. But do you get what you pay for?
Good build quality; Image stabiliser; Quick start up time
Fringing is visible at high contrast areas

Canon wheeled out a whole bunch of new products today and we got a taster test of quite a few of them. First up was the Canon Digital Ixus 860IS. Despite packing in a 28mm zoom lens, this is a beautiful little model.
Even the model being displayed in Canon's official waterproof case was a doddle to get to grips with. The raised buttons on the plastic chassis (good for up to 130ft) are well thought out for easy underwater use and they all come with logos or text...

With easy-to-use controls and a wide shooting angle, the Canon SD870 produces exceptional images.
Big, 3-inch LCD. Wide-angle lens. Touch wheel control.
No optical viewfinder. High ISO settings result in noisy images. ; Watch the Canon PowerShot SD870 IS Video Review!

Though not made as sturdily as other Elphs, the SD870 IS has a big LCD and an extra-wide zoom lens, and takes great pictures.
Extra-wide zoom lens ; Big LCD (3 inches)
Not as well constructed as other Elphs ; Animated on-screen button is distracting
It's pricey, but the extra-wide-angle lens, the big LCD, and the well-thought-out exposure control system make this an attractive compact camera
