Polywell Poly X5800A3-990X

Polywell's Poly X5800A3-990X ($3499 as of March 1, 2011) illustrates how close the competition is atop the performance desktop PC chart. The X5800A3's strong showing on our tests puts it right with most of its rivals. The problem? Others do better.

Diverse connection options and a great wiring job ; Six cores and strong speeds

Lacks an overclock as shipped ; Performance lags behind less expensive competitors

For a stock-clock, six-core system, Polywell's Poly X5800A3-990X delivers a lot, but a few tweaks would have made it even better (and more competitive).

Polywell Poly X5800A3

Though it is the first system with Intel's Gulftown processor to grace the PCWorld Labs, the Polywell Poly X5800A3 doesn't shoot close to the top of our performance PC rankings by virtue of its six-core technology alone. What that processor does do,...

USB 3.0 joins a mass of connectivity options ; Near-chart-topping, six-core performance

Messy internal wiring job impedes access ; Case design makes some upgrades strenuous

It may not be much to look at, but the Poly X5800A3 offers premier components and delivers fast speeds, making for quite a compelling power PC.

Polywell Poly X5800A3

The top of the case has a built-in tray to hold small, miscellaneous items like your iPhone or an external hard drive, which can be connected to the top-mounted FireWire or two USB 2.0 ports. The back of the system has two DVI ports and a mini HDMI...

Speedy performance numbers. Top-of-the-line Intel Core i7 processor. No bloatware. USB 3.0 on the motherboard. Some expansion room

Mass of wiring blocks airflow. No eSATA

The Polywell Poly X5800A3 is perfect for the prosumer to professional-level multimedia artist who needs a high-powered multimedia Windows 7 PC, but wants to have the option to play high-end 3D games when off the clock.
