Norco DS-500

If every other external enclosure we've reviewed has been a Chevy Nova, then Norco's DS-500 external SATA storage, um, block is easily a Humvee. For this device not only performs solidly but also weighs as much as everyone's favorite urban assault...

Setting this enclosure up is ridiculously simple--and the included software makes it even easier to use

Five hard-drives in one enclosure--it's hard to believe that the built-in fan is fully cooling them. Oh, it's a bit on the pricy side too

If money’s no object, the DS-500 should suit your storage needs perfectly. Stick five drives in there, and it could even double as a wheel stop for your jet.

NORCO DS-500 5 Bay eSATA RAID Hard Drive Storage Array - OEM

The RAID on the controller card is SOFTWARE RAID. So, spanning is easier done and managed with Windows dynamic disks. I bought a HARDWARE RAID controller card from another vendor (search "2304"). Currently have a RAID 5 array with 5x 500GB drives.

sturdy case. keeps drives cool. packaged controller card works great for JBOD

power supply fan is loud

Good to Go

Read the instructions on the CD, very short, the CD is bootable!! I was going to buy a home NAS, but I think this was way better, the extra drive bay (5 instead or 4 compaired to most NASs) adds room to grow.

Out of the box, you can install the eSATA card, plug the cable up and start adding drives. If you are planing on doing software Raid or JBOD then no other configs are needed. It's configured for that out of the box ; Anyone could buy this and turn a...

Didnt read all the instructions...so when you install the card, it auto-detects the Raid portion of the card and want to install the drivers, however it is not set up for hardware raid until after you flash the cards BIOS. So if you donot want to go...
